With apologies for the 12 ga content, for those of you in the Western US, the Big 5 Sporting Goods chain has the Mossberg Model 88 Maverick 12 ga pump on sale this week for $210. Yes, two hundred ten American dollars.

The sale includes the Model 88 Field model with 28" Vent Rib barrel. We picked one up today and it is VERY impressive. White muzzle bead, brass mid bead, steel to steel bolt lockup (aluminum receiver body), Mod choke tube, twin action bars, plastic stock with built in recoil pad.

The Model 88 Field does not have the crude look or feel of typical budget guns. Blueing is a deep bright blue, not a dull rough parkerized finish.

Operation is smoother and more positive compared to the "other" budget US made pump which we acquired a few years back.

Mossberg is an American company (some Model 88 parts come from Mexico) and makes some very innovative first rate firearms, one of which performed spectacularly for us last season in the rugged timbered ridges of Western WA. Alas, no 16 ga guns yet. (There's the obligatory 16 ga content Wink )

Caveat: We have not fired the Model 88 yet. The real acid test will come this weekend at the range with the pattern board and clays. With all due respect to 16 ga readers here, we will report results afterward if anyone is interested.

V/R

Update:
We test fired the gun this past weekend and everything checked out. 60/40 Mod pattern on POA. No problems whatsoever. Followed up with round of trap by first time shooter who broke several targets. After two boxes the action evened out and is now very smooth and slick. What an outstanding value. Next step is order Skeet or maybe IC choke from Mossberg.

There are four Mossberg 500s on the property, 2 12 gauge guns, a 20 gauge youth, and a .410.
Solid, everyday guns. The 500 came in 16 gauge for one year, 1961 I think. Many people who would otherwise not have a chance to participate in the hunting or shooting outdoors got their start with the lowly Mossberg pump.

Enjoy.

Best,
Ted

Follow-up: Our youngest took the Model 88 12 ga. on his inaugural outing the other day, dropped a pheasant with his first ever shot in the field. Bismuth No. 4, 45 yds outbound.

And his Dad missed two, but hopefully that detail won't come out when the story gets told.

Cheers,
B.
