Hi all, I was looking thru Lymans 5th and came across this recipe:

2 3/4" Federal Hull
Win 209 Primer
Z-16 Wad
24.5 grs Longshot
1 1/8oz payload
1237fps
6500psi

I loaded up a few and they loaded beautifully. You do need an overshot card to get perfect crimps.

Patterned them and they patterned very well (at least in the gun I used!). A bit tight, but not overly tight.

With the 1 1/8oz payload this should be a nice load for pheasants and prairie grouse in an older vintage gun.

Just thought I'd pass this on.

Best,

Greg

That looks like a real nice load, for those that are pressure sensitive!!

Whenever I see these 1 1/8oz loads I think would this be too strong for my Elsie for a few shots at pheasants a year. This one though has really low pressure. Does it burn dirty? And thanks for sharing.

I kinda understand the recoil part that beats up the wood, but LC Smith's are strong shotguns.

Greg, that looks like a workable load if one wants pressure that low.

I've noticed that load in the 16 ga. wahoo spreadsheet ("loads by wad") and one thing that has always troubled me a little was how the next load listed (sourced from Ballistic Products) show a large pressure jump with 1/2 a grain less powder and switching only to the Federal 209A primer. All of the other components are the same. Yes, we know the Fed 209A is a hotter primer, but there is a 3,800 psi jump. That and I'm always a little leery of Ballistic Product's data. Just a minor heads up!

Hey Dave, I agree 100%, BPI loads are sketchy at best. I go with loads that are proven either thru Lymans 5th (The Bible!), the powder manufacturers or those tested on reliable spreadsheets. BPI has some nice stuff, but their data is questionable.

Best,

Greg
