After the dove opener using my old sauer side lock 16 with hammers and English style stock with a bear tooth pad to give me a longer lop I really liked the way it performed using the 3/4 ounce rst loads.I was wondering if a lot of you guys also like the 28 gauge for dove and quail........?

During the dove season I use from 410 to 10 gauge

What fun

Never have hunted dove/quail but have been a big fan of the 28 for years. woodcock, grouse, pheasants, clays. Newest is a CZ Bobwhite G2. Have been shooting it at clays and doing as well as any of my other guns of any price. Definitely will be giving it a try in the uplands soon.

Your CZ 28 felt really good to me when I handled it.

Aurelio,
I think you are asking for responses on folks who have used RST 28 GA shells. I have a friend that uses the 28’s and he is very pleased with them. I use RST 16 ga 1 oz loads and some of the 7/8 oz loads, #7.5 for grouse and #6 for pheasant and #5 for the few times I need bismuth. I think they make great shells.

Hope that helps,

Good Hunting,
Mike

Best morning I ever had Dove shooting was with my Model 12, 28-gauge, Skeet Gun. That was long before 28-gauge shells became so ridiculously expensive. Opening Day 1973, Zillah, Washington, my Model 12 at the top, Uncle Larry's Beretta and my Father's Winchester 101 20-gauge I brought back from Japan the year before --

Have shot more doves the last 15 years with a 28ga. Ruger Red Label than everything else combined.

Can speak for a 28 on dove and quail, but mine does a fine job dropping ruffed grouse and woodcock.

No doubt the 28 ga is the sweet spot of the red labels

...I bought myself a 28ga 870 with the money I saved when I quit smoking in 1990

Ended up the century using it almost exclusively for Dove and Quail here in SoCal as well as for them + Pheasant, Duck and Geese in Baja
1oz #6 via fixed MOD was plenty good from the decoys out to 40 ish and Pheasant, 3/4 oz 8 or 7 1/2 Quail and Dove and the occasional Pheasant.

...Then around 2000 I missed my sixteen and haven't looked back.

Aurellio,

My old L.C. Smith #2 gun permanently sleeved for 28 by Briley does a great job with both the RST & Poly SpredR loads on Doves, Grouse & Woodcock. Could not Dove hunt this season, just had open heart surgery and am doing fine here at home recovering.

My buddy Don Moody was plain murder on Doves with his 28 guns, sure do miss the old Texas wild man, I was lucky not to have joined him in God's great Quail fields in the sky, just a little while ago.

All the Best
