Today was the last day of upland here. My dogs were amazing today, solid points on late season roosters. We were done way too fast. Only 9 months until grouse and partridge season opens....

GilS, been a long time since I have seen that many woodcock!! We used to be covered up with them.

Uh, well actually we still do get birds but the seasons have been changed and it is tough to catch the flights now.

They are a blast to hunt and I am a little jealous.

MSM,
Georgia is an unsung wintering ground for the Eastern section of the country and the birds we get are at the stop sign of migration. https://www.woodcockmigration.org/migration.html It is a bird that few here specialize in hunting.
Billy joined Floyd, the MuttPak and me on what may have been the last day of woodcock for us in Georgia this past Wednesday because of spring-like temperature predictions until the closing date of January 20th. Things may cool off the last few days of the Ga. season. Because of rain flooded woods in Plan A, we had a plan B in place that worked. Seven woodcock and two quail. This was a new area for us and a wild covey of over a dozen birds was a bonus. Willa pinned it down and we got two on the rise. We didn't pursue singles. Floyd's Ithaca SKB 100 20 ga., my Ithaca SKB 20 ga. with the Gamekeeper sling, and Billy's granddad's 1953 Superposed 20 ga. If temps get better after the 20th, we'll have a week and half left in SC. We had a fun season on woodcock this year.

Gil, Always like seeing your pics with you and your friends SKB Ithacas. I have a 280E version so wondering how the sling attaches to the barrel end and where you purchased it.

Savage16, thanks.
CSMC lists two styles but Ive only seen the type I have in stock over the past two or three years. The barrel is secured by a C shaped leather covered piece of malleable metal that can be compressed or expanded by hand pressure to snuggly fit over the barrels of different gauges. I use it also on a 20 ga. Darne R10 and several 16 ga. doubles. The opening of the C sits atop the rib section in unobscured fashion so as to afford a normal sight view.

Most of my brother's and my bird hunting is done in January, after the long deer seasons and with better weather in most cases. We've been four times so far this year, finding 3 coveys of quail each time. The most recent hunt ended up on an old home place, where we found two good coveys and had a decent kill. So, here are a couple of pictures of that rare event, a successful southern quail hunt!

By the way, this was an Ithaca 16 gauge day. After using my NID sporadically over 30 plus years, I've used it almost every hunt this year. I'm starting to like that gun!

4setters,
great account and photos. Nothing like pursuing the classic American gamebird with the American guns designed and sold for their pursuit. Gil
