Earlier this week I came upon a Auto 5, it was not a “sweet” but a standard model.

The top of the barrel had knurling or checkering on it from the bead back to the action.

Is this normal? Thanks.

It’s called a matted barrel. Are you sure it’s a standard and not a sweet? If the serial number it could be a “stealth” sweet sixteen.

My plain barrel 1949 std. A5 has no matting.
My plain barrel 1951 sweet has full length matting.

Thanks guys. I’m new to the auto 5.

Numbers on the receiver screws matched the receiver. It’s no safe queen and has been used well. I dont really upland hunt but hunt ducks a lot and figured this would be a good one to add to the arsenal which only consists of my new A5 now.

Barrel was marked 2 3/4” but NOT marked with the choking.

Price was $659 if I remember right.

No "stars" (actually an asterisk, I believe) on the left side of the barrel in front of receiver? This designates choke on Auto-5 barrels. There has been slight variation over the years, but generally * means full, _* improved modified, ** modified, **_improved cylinder, *** cylinder.

I’m sure it was marked but I was unaware of the marking system. I was on the road and the gun is in Iowa. I don’t have anything coming up that I need to go back down there for so I doubt I’ll see it again.
