Lloyd3,

IMO fine Bamboo Fly Rods like fine double guns should be used as often as possible by the current owner. Storing them away gives the owner no usage pleasure what so ever. Having had more than a few conversations with GBE about his use of Dr Norris's 12 Gauge Purdey shotgun and the refinishing of it's stocks, I understood GBE agreed with our family tradition of using and taking care of both fine fishing rods and double guns.

Honor the man by using the sporting equipment he has passed down to you, remember him while using it. Cherish the memories.

Dave: Most of my sporting tackle isn't inherited. All that remains from the meager leavings of my father's holdings is an 1886 Winchester in .33 Win that was my great-grandfathers. The rest was very humble. So....while I'm drawn to the perceived history and traditions of each piece I use, they must function flawlessly for my purposes. I appreciate the artistic beauty that some of them offer, but form and then function is argueably more beautiful to me. I dont have many items very long that don't do a specific job and do it well. Sadly, I'm results oriented (with a little art and history thrown in to keep it interesting).

One of my very favorite Fall shots from several years ago now (10-12?). The leaves were coming down like a steady rain and blanketing everything (you could actually hear it!). The very next day it snowed and howled for more than 24-hours and all of this was gone. Even walking in the woods after that was very challenging because of all the snow under a frozen crust of ice. The very next year... this section of the forest was timbered by clear-cut, with the logs skidded out and piled by the road. It still wasn't really hunt-able even last year. Talk about ephemeral!

Typical January day yesterday, here in Nebraska. Cold and foggy to start...

I'd much rather contemplate a bright November day a few short years ago, on the eastern plains of Colorado. Game farm birds can be fun too.

Lloyd3,

I love those beautiful fall days also, I also love the early winter days with just a little snow to make the Grouse want to set still just a little longer.

No question Dave, that period before real winter is pretty spectacular.

If that looks cold I can assure you, it is.

Dave: I know you're a fan of fine tackle but here's a couple of old warhorses that still get the job done...

Gorgeous day here in Denver yesterday, well over 70 degrees. Since I'm an NFL holdout these days, I used the Superbowl as an opportunity to get some alone time on the water.

Between traffic and other obligations, my time on the water was too-short. No fish shots to share, but getting out was simply wonderful.

Darn cold here this AM. Three degrees below zero. Makes me think of other cold mornings...

Lloyd3,

Beautiful pictures, I spent a lot of time on Elk Creek with my Bamboo Salmon Rod when I was younger, great to see you alone on that stretch of the stream.

Got to tell ya I much prefer Potter County and my native Brook, Brownie and Rainbow fishing, simply because I can be alone in the mountain streams. In the fall I can Fly Fish and Grouse hunt both on the same day, and see very few other people.

My Grandfather told me I thought more of Ryman dogs than of most humans, and I guess he was probably correct. Our family traditions of Grouse hunting and Fly Fishing made it easy to be this way. My log cabin not to far from Pine Creek makes it even easier to avoid most people, especially in the fall when the mountains are so beautiful.

I do miss my Grandfather and my Father however, I still have my Ryman dogs and am very glad I have new Ryman and Gordon female puppies to keep me busy. As a boy I was exceedingly lucky to have been taught how to train gun dogs by George Ryman and my Grandfather here in our mountains, and to have become friends with GBE and Kay because of our Ryman dogs.

Sometime you will have to make it over and Grouse & Woodcock hunt in Potter/Tioga when I am back on my feet properly.

all the best

Dave: To an old Penn's Woods exile you make the "old country" sound very enticing. Do, by all means, get healthy. One never knows when I'll be back in that part of the world, but I'll look you up if I do.

when I was a kid , dad's gun gang had 300 acres - probably not that far from PC Dave . The block that prop was on was 2mi X 3mi diamond shaped . Could go on every square inch to hunt - GREAT !! None is avail now with new owners and prop splits . My 48 seems quite small !! Could do almost any of those cool pics there ..... Knew Ron Kusse from about the time I was 15 . Before Leonard and his rod co . Talked to him on and off as the yrs went by . Lost track of him and had a vision one night and there he was on the web . Talked back and forth and he was talking about coming back to this area and finishing off his rod obligations to retirement . He passed in the meantime . As many sporting things that went thru my grip , ALWAYS wished I would have gotten one of his blanks . So Sad !
