I bought something a couple of months ago that I thought I'd never buy - a gun purely for the joy of seeing it on my wall. Although it's in amazing condition inside and out, the locks are tight and bores very clean, I'm not sure I'd want to try firing it. One if these days I might...

It's a Moore of London 12 gauge SxS with dog's head hammers, made in 1850, with London Fine Chain Twist 28" barrels. The engraving is nice, the wood pretty, and from what I've been able to find the dog's head hammers are very rare.

And yes, it's not a 16 gauge but I figured you folks might appreciate it too! Very Happy

That's awesome. That's what guns are all about. Enjoyment! I hope you get around to shooting it with some light bp loads.

I have not seen the term "London Fine Chain Twist". Is that the mark on the rib? Old chain was reported to be a source for the steel component of early English twist barrels.
Could you please post a high resolution close up of the pattern?

I got a civil war era shotgun at a Florida show a while back . Not as fancy and few markings . Dealer thought it was a 20 , but when i got home , !6 !! Peculiar gun - has 33'' barrels , but only weighs 5 # . Couldn't help myself , so tried cleaning the bore , 50grns 2F and 3/4 shot . Even Jane needed to shoot it being it's age and all . Thought about taking it out west for one of the shorter hunts , but what a PITA carrying the loading stuff and actually reloading it . tempting though !!

You are the caretaker now, so enjoy it and keep it in nice condition.

Good Hunting (with your other guns),

You could make paper cartridges, similar too musket ammo. I do it for my repro 12 ga. I can post my procedure if you are interested.

that pic is a cap Lock and so is mine . Never investigated a pre loaded type shell - don't think it would survive the ram down the barrel ... My loads are anemic to say the least !

Here is my report on paper cartridges for the 12 gauge shotgun. Adapting to 16 gauge is doable, I think.

Yes it's a front-stuffer. I'll see if I can get some pictures posted tomorrow - it's been a busy week!
