I received some questions ref. the 16 ga L.C. Smith straight stock gun I recently purchased. Yes the gun is a featherweight, 28" barrels, mod & full choke. It may be a little tight for quail or grouse but I have a couple of boxes of Poly-wad spreader loads that will open the pattern up. Can anyone give me the name of a distributor that carries a good variety of 16 ga. shells, im trying to find some #5 shot for pheasant hunting. #5 is one of my favorite shot sizes for pheasant size birds.

I had to reload my own copper-plated # 5s, as I gave up on finding anyone who mfg. them. my Elsie had the same barrel and choke configurations as yours and since I deem her an upland gun, I sent the barrels away to Mike Orlen to open the chokes to skeet 1 and skeet 2. He also discovered that my chamber was only 2 9/16 and lengthened her to 2 3/4. He also may have back-bored her too...not so sure ( mind must be going). Anyway all that is just a thought in case you don't like the way the spreader loads perform. Again, great find on a very unique L.C. Smith |

Kent makes some nice #5 loads in both TM and lead. |

Fiocchi makes their Golden Pheasant plated rounds in #5's. You can usually find them at Cabella's. |

I've shot 5's and 7's from B&P. The 7's really did a number on chuckars at some distance. I was surprised that they killed some of the birds I shot at.
