#915xx, circa 1931. It's a three-shot model 16 gauge. |

R27XXX, 1955, a young 'un. My pheasant go-to gun when pheasants are the expected upland bird. A killing machine. |

Yes sir, straight stock and all. She runs like a champ. Got an extra barrel with chokes, killing machine on the skeet field. Sure turns heads. Most have no clue what it is |

I'm away from my only 16 gauge A-5 right now, so I can't check its S/N and other markings, but after I bought it several years ago I asked Jeff Mulliken about it. Jeff was one of the Browning experts on this site. If I recall correctly, he said it was the 5th one after Browning started to put their own name on A-5's, and it was made in 1921. As I recall, it does say "Browning" on the barrel, though it has the FN horn buttplate. Make of all this what you will, I don't know the facts that would corroborate the date of manufacture. I'm a few states away from the gun right now, and Jeff Mulliken has left the planet. I'm guessing some of you Browning historians on this site can lead me to the facts later, if necessary.
My A-5 is the European style, with a straight grip, and sling swivels. Other than in photos, I have never seen another straight grip 16 gauge A-5. I know they're out there, as some fellows on this site have posted photos of theirs. Being the straight grip nut I am, I would never have bought it if it wasn't straight gripped. The 25 1/2 inch full choked plain barrel has a 65mm (2 9/16 inch) chamber, naturally. I wish it had the solid rib. All S/N's match, (every screw is serialed) and though the exterior finish of the gun is well worn, the interior is not. The gun is all there, and works well -- another one of my "sow's ear to silk purse" projects, awaiting its turn. I haven't used it much. One afternoon, hunting in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, I took some sharptails and pheasants, and one Hungarian partridge with it.
Cheers! |

I guess I have a brand new one since it was freshly made in 1959. |
