I've been reloading 6 or 7 steel for about 15 years in 16 gauge, ever since recipes came out in Lyman's 5th reloading guide. I mostly shoot them at wild bobwhite quail, but some winter doves. Overall, I am pleased with these loads. I shoot them in my more modern 16s that are approved for steel shot, such as my Citori, A-5, BPS, etc.
A summary of the load I use from Lyman's 5th is: Win plastic, plastic basewad (I also use other straight walled Italian or Federal hulls), 22.0 or 22.5 (Federal) gr STEEL, 7/8 oz shot, Federal 209A, one BP Multimetal (now BP PT-1680). This load gives somewhere around 1300 FPS and 8400 (Federal) or 9200 psi. I put a bean-sized chunk of Styrofoam or some other item in the wad under the shot to bring the load up to correct crimping height, and usually put a very thin piece of packing foam over the shot and under the crimp.
The 5th also lists a similar load for Remington hulls, with 21 gr. of STEEl, but the Psi's are elevated to 10,600 with this load, probably due to the thicker plastic in Remington hulls.
There are other loads out there using Blue Dot and some other powders, but this is what I have used. It works well for me, so I have stuck with it. |
