Well it was Opening day for upland hunting today in NH, and my New A5 Sweet 16 accounted for 2 birds.

While trudging around I began to note the odd feel of the pistol grip, and have noticed in some of the postings that other New A5 Sweet 16 owners have opted for butt stock modification.

I've seen several pictures, but never took serious note - now I am.

So what "stock options" are there ?

I've seen photos of 'straight English stocks', and Prince of Wales (POW) - are there any others ?

Did those who had their butt-stocks modified were they satisfied with the end product ?, and is one style of modification more desirable than another ?

Who does this work (would like contact information) ?

How much does it cost, and how long does it take ?

Do the stock artisans who provide this service use your existing stock, or do they install a new one ?

And is t worth it ?

I leave Sunday for most of the month of Oct. grouse hunting where cell reception and internet is pretty scarce so I may not be able to reply for a few weeks. Need to come back for 4 days in the middle of the month for work though.

I saw one that was turned into a POW and it looked amazing ! I think it was Dave’s. I like an English grip but not so much on an auto loader.

Day 2 in the field had me focusing on the “obtrusiveness” of the pistol grip - so I’m pretty much convinced that something has to be done, although my friend advises against modifying the stock so as not to affect value.

As of the moment I’m thinking a POW grip is the way to go - seems more intrinsic for a semi-auto than a straight grip, they seem better suited to a double.

Now for what’s to be done, when to do it, and who to do the work.

I live in Massachusetts, are there any good gunstock artisans near me ?, or does my Sweet 16 need to go on a cross country vacation.

I sent my new SW16 to Mark Larson in Oregon. He’s going to convert it to a POW grip, and do grain enhancement to the wood. It’s probably 30-45 days before it’s done. Will post results when I have it.

If you are worried about resale value, you could buy another but stock. Have it converted. You’d have original if you plan to sell. If you like the shotgun and plan to keep it, sell the original. Just a thought.

Just out of curiosity I’d like to see pictures of the straight English and Prince Wales stocks. The existing A5 Sweet 16 stock, with the correct shim, fits me like a glove so I’m not looking to make a change.
