Unfortunately there are no birds left in Michigan. The Marquette DNR office reports they all migrated to WI, MN and even parts of Ohio and PA. The forests have gone through a remarkable transformation and the aspen have all aged to past 40 years, the alder runs have dried and withered, and the beech and birch have toppled to the forest floor. The Hawthorne, wintergreen, high bush cranberry and bunchberry have no fruit and are shriveling.
Stay home and do not venture north.
Good Hunting in WI, MN, OH and PA. Oh, someone said Maine was great this year,
Mike |

Good advice re Ohio....not sure about the other states.
Please come to Ohio to hunt ruffed grouse...especially during the first two weeks of November, that is always prime time.
The grouse numbers found will only be exceeded by the welcome you receive. |

Mike,
Even with all the negative advertisement here in this post, I will not cancel my Grouse hunting trip this year to the UP. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods, will be in the woods on the 18th of October hope we have some decent weather this year!

My dog went lame this morning and will not put weight on left rear leg. Happened on two track driveway. Off to Vet at 4:00 PM to see what is up. My only other dog is 7 months old. May be a long season depending on what I hear at Vet.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Mike,
Not good news for sure hope the Vet give you better news. I am working with 2 pups under 11 months myself, the Gordon pup is looking like an exceptional young Grouse dog, point 25 yards back of the Grouse so my season is starting to look up with the training I am doing.
Good luck to you mike.

Sorry to hear about the dog, Chicago, and hope that it all works out well. Looking at it from the brighter side, you'll get to work with the pup and watch the lights come on as it gets the idea these bird things are fun. |

Mike, I hope it's something minor. Sorry to hear of this. Looks like your 7 month old will get plenty of exposure. |

Torn or ruptured cruciate ligament so he is down for 8 to 12 weeks after surgery. I need to get him home to my Vet to confirm it is ruptured and not just torn, which could heal, but either way he is done for grouse season.
Like Dave in Maine said I will get to spend a lot more time with the youngster who is pointing, but crowding the birds. My son has a pup from the same litter and he is up here for a week so they will both get work and introduced to the gun.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Mike,
Good luck with your injured dog and have fun training your young one! Getting ready to take my young Gordon out this morning for some more work in the Grouse woods myself.
All the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Sorry to hear about the dog injury. An opportunity to focus on the young dog can bring a lot of enjoyment so at least there is something positive to keep you in the woods. |

Bad news on your dogs injury, let's hope it's not too bad and makes a good recovery, enjoy your time in the woods with your son and the pups and keep us posted on your hunts and your dogs recovery .
All the best WJ. |

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts. He will recover in full if he needs the surgery. Spent time with the pups today and moved some grouse.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your dog and wishing you the best also also. I know from experience how trying it is to keep a injured and healing dog from aggrivating a injury. |

I finally caught up with my Vet today and I will take Birch home on the 18th so I can drop him off at the Vet on the 19th for an evaluation. If he thinks Birch needs surgery he will perform that on 20th and he said it will be a 6 week recovery. So we will be able to do some hunting in December and through the winter if the weather holds.
I took Cedar out today for his first hunt (using the term loosely) and we enjoyed the walk and I found a couple of new pieces of cover. Later in the day my better half and I took Cedar for a hike. Here is a current image of the little feller.
