Accidentally put 1 round through the washing machine in my hunting pants so decided to disassemble it. First out was the copper plated shot. Dial caliper showed them to be true to the 5 shot sizing. There were 5 unplated bb's in the mix that calipered to about 6 shot. Scaling all of it came out to 490;about 1 pellet short of 1 1/8oz. Pretty good. next came the 2 piece wad. For some reason I thought they put a 1 piece wad in this load?? Only thing unusual is the shot cup has a distinct hole in the bottom, just offcenter. Never seen any other wad like that. Also, the post part of the base is pushed down close to the gas seal part. Way shorter than the same wad out of typical 1 oz load. Last the powder scaled out at 29.6 grains! Wow! Anyway that's that |

WOW, a man after my own heart.
I am an engineer, and consider myself to be a technical shooter.
A picture of that unusual wad would have been appreciated.
I shot that round this year and had good luck.
Then again Federal has stepped up to the head of the class these days. |

Not trying to be rude but....since there is no access to the components in most factory shells, why bother cutting apart perfectly good ammunition? |

MSM I don't take your comment as rude but if you reread the first line it was 1 rd that went through the clothes washing machine. Couldn't see throwing it back in the box and I saved the copper shot to reload. |

I believe they put that wee hole in there so air can escape during the loading process. Most wads have small slots in sides or such to allow air to escape like that. The 2 part wad is something Federal uses so they can just adjust the OAL of their wads for good fit, without having to use 200 different wads-- the powder cup remains the same, the shot cup is the same, they just adjust the post length and hey presto, 200 different OAL perfectly fitting wads from one set of dies, via a little slicing. Pretty smart.
Thx for the autopsy! |

Interesting...Anyone care to speculate what the powder may be? 29.6 seems like a lot.
