Looks like they built it on the 12 gauge frame. It’s at 6 lbs 8 oz’s. Why do companies do this? It should have been built on its own frame. It would be closer to or at 6lbs. I’ve been eyeing up the 28 gauge for a while now.

I emailed Tri-Star asking if it was built on a true 16 gauge frame or if it was repurposed on their existing 12 gauge frame.

Their response:

Quote:
Yes, it is built on a true 16ga frame.

Might make a good rainy day duck gun if nothing else.

Cool move to market a new 16 gauge semiauto.

I sometimes wonder if Turkish gun makers are going to follow the path of Japanese automobile manufacturers as they market their products in the USA.

I recall that back in the 1970s and 80s, Japanese automobiles and engines were considered to be junk.

Now, some Japanese automobiles and engines are considered to be among the best in the American market.

My local dealer should be receiving the standard wood model in a week or two.

I’ll see if it follows me home!

Well glory hallelujah !

I don’t think that I’ll be buying one - at least anytime soon, but I see this as a tremendous indication of a potential seismic move in the firearms market place.

I don’t know what to make of this 3” chambering, in 28 ga too, but that plays into my thinkings regarding what’s going on out there.

It’s been a couple years since I went to the annual SHOT Show, but anyone who has would certainly see that the manufacturers have wrung every drop out of 12 and 20 ga, they need a new vein of market share to explore. And this could very well be it - I know I hope so.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful, I might actually be able to find 16 ga ammo again worth a hoot within a reasonable drive of my house.

The worst thing I have to say is Tristan offering is on the heavy side for my likings. As I’m staring 70 eye-to-eye, lighter guns are my fancy these days. BUT !, this could be the dawning of a new age. Who knows, only time will tell.

Really? A 16 gauge that weighs in at 6.5 lbs is a heavy gun?

I do not understand.

How much should a 16 gauge weigh?

I agree. The walnut version is 6.5 and the bronze 6.6. Seems about right to me. At any rate, I would be all over one of these if I didn’t recently buy a 1148. Much different guns I know. Not many gas autos available in 16 other than Tristar is there? FWIW the folks over on SGW are pretty high on these guns. Very tempting with Christmas just around the corner😁.

Good shooting, John.

I was hopeful that Tristar knew something we don't about the 3 inch designation but only because I would like to see something other than 15/16 steel offerings. Alas, a call to them finds the 3 in is a misprint.
Also, for right now, 28 in is the only barrel length. They want to see how it sells before adding others.
They did say that 6.5 lbs is how the guns are actually real world weighing.

6.6 pounds is lighter than the original sweet 16 and the slightly lighter than Remington 11-48s. Yes, the new sweet at under 6 pounds set a new lightweight standard for an 16 ga autoloader. We need to give Tri-Star credit for sending a new 16 ga auto. to the market.

Just for kicks I weighed some shotguns in the safe. 6 1/2 to 6 3/4 lb 16 auto loader seems about right.

Tristar Viper G2 Bronze 20 gauge. 6# 5 oz. (website claims 6#2 oz)
Beretta 391 Urika 12 gauge 28” 7# 0 oz
Beretta A300 synthetic 12/28, 7-8 oz
Ithaca 37 16, early 50s version, 26”, 6-2oz
Winchester Model 12 12/28”, 7-7oz
Remington 870 20 youth, 21”, 6-1oz
Ithaca 37 20, early 50s, 28” 6-1oz
Savage 745 12, 7-1oz
Jc Higgins 12/28, 7-9oz
Browning BPS 20/28”, 7lbs even
Beretta 686 12/28 7-1oz

RE my preference for light weight guns -

Starting back about 10 years ago or so, I began gravitating toward light weight upland guns.

Generally 6 and a half pounds is my threshold, 6 pounds and perhaps an ounce or two over is ideal. A couple of my upland guns weigh under 6 pounds unloaded - my Beretta A400 in 28 ga, and my new Browning Sweet Sixteen.

When Upland hunting I cover quite a few miles over hill and dale, and push through some thick brush and prickly thicket - so I find a light weight gun to be my preference. And this year I’ve gotten out 24 times.

So that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
