Marty with a couple of Huns we took this morning.
One on the covey rise and one as a single. That single held very tight.
One of those steel gray days, a few snow flurries, 18 degrees, a light northwest wind and two perfect points. It doesn't get any better. |

Good work Mark. I made it out for a couple hours today and went 0 for 2 on perfectly pointed roosters. |

win7stw,
I had a nice point on a rooster today also, but the SOB flew back into the shelter belt. Never did pull the trigger on him. |

Mark,
Great work for the Huns, no big deal about a lone Pheasant getting away. The Huns are the prize! Serious work by the dog!

Pine Creek/Dave,
Yeah but, he was big and noisy.......actually that rooster held better than any other pheasant this year. Shocked me when the dog went on point and I made it to the dog before he flushed. The bird was within 10 feet of the dog. That was the exception. |

Done!!
It is a lot of fun watching a young dog work and learn and progress.
The dog is the best part of upland bird hunting.....at least for me!! |

Couple more from today. Dog wasn’t feeling very photogenic and I didn’t have a good background for pics today.

Been having a great season since moving back to Oregon last year. Saturday was a great day. Got a bunch of chukars and a couple huns. These big fat late season chukars (I like to call them chuckens) are huge! And so, so tasty. Yummm..
Here's a photo I like from my last duck hunting trip. I would title this one "A Good Day:"

Had a really nice afternoon dove shoot yesterday on a friend's sunflower field. We went to the field at 3:45 and birds soon started drifting in. There was only three of us, but we accounted for 36 by a little after 5:00.
I used my Parker DHE 20/16/32", with the 16s in place. Polywad spreaders in the right barrel for closer shots and Rio 1 oz. loads in the left for the longer shots. Thirteen doves in the pic ..... picked up one more, and lost one which fell in a pond that was too deep for me to get to it. So, the Parker accounted for a full limit of 15. You can click on the pic to enlarge it.
Beautiful sunny, breezy afternoon with temps 60 to 65 F.

It’s been awhile but we had a great trip out around Pierre and managed to ambush a few chickens and grouse and phez. I took an old friend who’d never seen the country or been on a walk about like that. After 30 years,it’s more about the sky, the dogs, the color of the prairie in the fall, and good company, than how big the stack of dead birds is or isn’t, though is is still preferable |

cowdoc87,
I hunted next to an old homestead yesterday and I completely agree with:

The lure of the prairie for me has always been the big sky and how you feel under it, sometimes small and insignificant and other times, stronger than ever. But it always takes my breath away.
I can remember in 1995 standing in the middle of a field in Avon, SD with my Britttany Maverick. We just took a bird, it was snowing and you could see the edge of the clouds in the west and the sun would soon be shining, I just stood there and yelled at the top of my lungs. I will never forget it. |
