Rocky was 8 mos. old in November when on this hunt in South Dakota.
He has been a pleasant surprise for his first year hunting.

fourtrax,

Glad to see you back buddy, tell me more about your new Pheasant hunting pup. What breed is he, can't exactly make him out in the picture posted, and where did you get him?

PC Dave,
Pup is a French britt from a kennel in South Dakota.
He was pointing birds (Ruffed Grouse) from 8 weeks onward. When I got him home
we gave him about a week to acclimate to us. Took him out in the woods on a trail for a walk / ride in the utv. Saw a grouse on the side of the trail. Shut the machine off and the grouse snuck off into the brush. By the time the Pup & I walked up there the grouse was well away in the brush. When the pup picked up his scent he locked up tight on point. Made this old heart go "pitter patter"..........
This Autumn he hunted Montana, South Dakota, & MN. He found, pointed, & retrieved both dead & wounded Pheasants, sharptails, huns, & ruffed grouse. He had lots of bird exposure due to good numbers of wild birds this year. It was a great year to start a pup. He hunts like an older dog but is a complete "screw off" at home as a Pup is, shall, & should be. He is very biddable. We will see what the second season brings.

He is a pretty good sized French Britt. He will likely grow / fill out a little more as he is about 10 1/2 mos yet.

Fourtrax,

Great stuff, I thought the dog was your French Brit we had talked about before, however I though you might have purchased a 2nd dog. Congrats on a great season, my Ryman Setter has had little time in the woods, my Gordon is turning into one Great Grouse dog however. She had a little training in the woods before my open heart surgery and she is working out very very well.

The nice grouse Shadow set up for my gunning just before Thanksgiving, looks like I have another Gordon who demolishes Grouse Tails!

Sounds like you hit the lottery with your new pup. Rocky is bout the same age as my GSP, Dan and I know full well how exciting and gratifying it can be to have a pup show that great potential. Please keep us informed on Rocky's exploits and share those pup pictures. I hate to say it, but that first picture i was thinking Lab, but wondering about the gray on the muzzle. Glad you cleared it up.

Welcome back Steve and glad you didn't give up trying to get back on! Look forward to seeing Rocky in action. Or even at one of the shoots this summer. Sounds like you may have found a replacement or at least runner up for Victor, may he rest in peace on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

So with 5 dogs now in these twenties below temps you must be having more fun than the law allows Laughing

Stay safe and stay warm.
