I hesitate to ask, but the society came through for me regarding a 16 ga steel target load - so it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Ideally I’m looking for a 12 ga 1 ounce target load of steel shot with a muzzle velocity of 1320 fps using either Alliant Steel or Blue Dot |

I went dove hunting for the first time last September in Iowa. Iowa public dove fields require nontoxic shot. I spent almost a month developing a load that I could use for dove hunting and skeet shooting.
Google: VP53 wad recipes. There you will find a PDF file with many steel shot target loads. I used this data to start my load development.
I did not have the VP53 wad, but I settled on the following:
Winchester AA hull
Cheddite 209 Primer
16 grains 700X powder
Claybuster 1 1/8 oz Figure 8 wad (with clear PVC liner)
310 grains #7 steel shot (dropped with 1 1/8 oz charge bar containing a small PVC bushing)
The PVC liner in the wad prevents any contact between the shot and barrel.
This load chronographs at about 1320 fps. It contains more than 300 pellets. It patterns beautifully. It performs very well on a skeet field. I cannot see a difference between my scores with this load and lead shot loads. The load performed extremely well on the dove field. |
