I did not think Activ were tapered, I’ll have to take a closer look at mine. I avoid Rem/Win/CB wad recipes in Activ as well.
Even with a SG16 wad, I see powder flakes occasionally come up past the seal when seating the wad in an Activ hull.

Active are straight wall hulls. They also have alot of volume. |

Pretty close. Do you need to add a nitro card to get a good crimp?

MOST 7/8 OZ LOADS IN A 2 3/4" STRAIGHT WALL HULL USING THE SG16 WAD WILL NEED A FILLER.
I EITHER USE THE DR16 WAD OR IF USING THE SG WAD USE A 2.5" HULL |

The DR16 looks to fit best. Data? Was hoping to find a recipe that had more readily available components rather than discontinued ones. I’m down to my last 3 bags. |

Tested load:
Federal 16 ga. paper basewad hull 2 3/4"
Winchester 209
16.0 grains 700-X
DR-16
7/8 oz. lead shot
1,267 FPS - 8,600 PSI
Tested by Precision Reloading LLC
Please don't ask about swapping primers. 8,600 PSI, tells you all you need to know. |

Haven’t been to Amarillo in quite a while. I use to get up that way occasionally when I lived in Odessa.
and thank you for the load data M |

Just for reference
Lon had this load tested by Precision Reloading in 2013
Cheddite hull 2 1/2"
Cheddite primer
15 grains 700X
SG16 or Gualandi 2116 wad
7/8 oz of 9s
With a 10-shot string Precision Reloading testing equipment showed an average velocity of 1,255 FPS, Standard Deviation (SD) of 5 and an Extreme Variation (EV) of 20 FPS. The pressure average was 10,338 PSI, SD of 261 PSI and EV of 730 PSI. |

I agree that the Activ hull is tapered, from the pics it is obvious. But the only wads that work in those hulls are the Gualandi and B & P, all other wads will float inside them, even in the tapered section.
FWIW, they were OK hulls but after a few reloads I used to get hull shootoffs and I was only using 1 oz. loads at 1,275 FPS with SR7625 powder. It was data from Activ. I did shoot a pile of blackbirds using Activ hulls though. They also fed very well in my A5 Sweet and 1100. |

Thanks for the links, putz. I did not get the chance to look at my hulls yesterday due to multiple vehicle issues, but that helps clear up my confusion. |

I don’t remember ever seeing these shells. When did they begin manufacturing them?
We’re they a regional item? Did they stop manufacturing due to an issue? |

If you do a search on this forum you will find some decent info on them.
The short story is they were made in WV up until about 20 yrs or so ago when the factory packed it up & left, possibly to South America. I have a bunch of new old-stock, some once fired, even some primed. As others have said, large volume for heavy loads if you need that. They can be finicky to load, though there are some tricks that help. |

The search function doesn’t work very well for me not sure if it is because I’m using my iPhone. I’ll give it a try on my desktop.
Those shells are definitely an oddity from traditional shells & very interesting. |

That load looks to have plenty of pressure to back it down 100fps and retain good pressure. That or Red Dot might be key to getting good moderate velocity 7/8 and 3/4oz loadings in CF AA hulls. |
