Excellent day out & about yesterday w/ the old humpback 16 in southern NY... Many grouse were moved & the dog work was good.

Outstanding glad to hear you had good Grouse contact in NY, next season I may have to purchase a NY hunting license again, much to my dismay. With our Grouse season now ending late December here in Pa, and both NY & WVa having Grouse seasons into late Jan, it is real tempting to jump across the state lines and Grouse hunt the 2nd season.
Congrats on a fine day in the Grouse woods!

PA makes it tough to be a grouse hunter, especially if you're a working stiff... The season is brief and you can't hunt Sundays, so if the weather is poor on Saturdays (like last season), your dogs hardly get a chance. I have a lifetime WV license and I'm buying the NY now, just to get the extended opportunities. Though in a snowy year, WV/NY aren't always huntable in January/February.
Wish we had Xmas week back in PA, at least, but I reckon it's gone forever. |

| I'm not fond of a lot of things in NY , BUT .... Deer season goes from 10/1 till X-mas , and Grouse goes from 10/1 till end of FEB . This yr we have no snow , so have a free shot at birding ! (this yr Deer even opened on the wk between X-mas and New YR's )Pretty similar to bird hunting in PA . |

It does give the sportsman a lot of opportunities.
I flushed a gray phase bird on Saturday, a first for me (I'm from down south), but I didn't have a safe shot the way it flushed over the dogs. |

| Boon - back when I was a free lance walking machine , I used to LOVE Grouseing at this time of year . There is NOTHING that approaches the excitement of stepping on a bird in a ft of snow and having it go up right between your feet !! ... disclaimer : what I meant by being like PA is the terrain and conditions , not the season parameters . |

I ran my dogs for a group preserve pheasant hunt in January and my two year old Dan was a star. He runs like the wind, but has such a great nose that he ends up pointing most of the birds in a field. Over a two day hunt he worked 48 birds and after a disastrous first hunt where the bird planting truck got stuck in the muddy field and we were delayed over an hour while the birds were getting up and wandering out of the field resulting in three of the twelve birds getting away, we only had two birds we didn't get in the bag. Great hunt and good shooting by everyone involved. Dan has developed into one heck of a bird dog.

Finally got rid of the flu enough to get out with the dogs for some preserve birds with a 16. I had a nice pic set up with jut the dog ,gun and the birds but the manager asked if I wanted to be in the pic. shoulda done it myself! Fun day dog worked great we didn't push it too much. 6 birds 4 Roosters and two hens. Needed more legs for soup.
