If reloading components weren’t in their current state I would sell you that powder and I’d send a jug of PB to Houston for Rob. However I don’t foresee things get any better and don’t want to be without shooting supplies. I’ve got two boys that are 9 and 7 and I’m hoping they keep me busy reloading soon |

win7stw,
I killed a lot of pheasants with 7625 in 1 1/8 oz. loads in the 16. That stuff is sweet. I was only kidding, I really didn't think you would part with it.....I certainly wouldn't!! |

So I have been completely bored since hunting season closed.
I tested some more loads for cold performance to see what I could find, since the first ones were less than stellar.
1/14/2023 Weather 28 degrees, cloudy, S wind @ 8 MPH, RH 78%
Shotgun used - Rem 1100 16 gauge, 28" barrel, 0.000" choke
Pro-Chrono - Start screen 2' from muzzle.
5 rounds of each load soaked for over 48 hours @ 70 degrees F.
5 rounds of each load soaked for over 48 hours @ -4 degrees F.
Chronograph was brought inside after each 5 round test, while data was being recorded.
Reference loads were shot at the beginning of the test. Reference loads were also soaked at 70 degrees F. All loads were shot within 3 minutes from the time I took them from the house or the freezer. Warming rounds were shot before each 5 shot string.
Reference loads assessment for average velocity - 1159 FPS
Reference loads as tested on 1/14/2023 - 1166 FPS
All powder and shot drops were weighed. All hulls were once fired. All rounds were loaded on a MEC Sizemaster.

Interesting numbers on the Longshot loads. I want to say that the Rem wad is the culprit on the RGL load. I tend to use the SG16 & Z16 for most of my Longshot loads, which are usually in straight wall hulls other than Remington. My black Rem hull loads are for woodcock/quail with the green ones loaded with Bismuth for those woodcock/duck hunts along a creek. Typically warmer weather stuff.
As my match load uses Longshot & Ch209 vs Fed209A, I may try the same type of tests to see what losses there are. |

Over the years I have been able to get all hull/wad combinations to work correctly and I have eliminated that as a problem.
The CCI 209M is the issue with Loads #1 & #5.
I have found two loads that work. Loads #3 & #4.
I'm going to use #4. |

I have never experienced the trouble with cold weather load performance because I don't leave my ammo out in sub-zero weather for days at a time I know I don't move very well after being out in the cold that long and would not expect many things to move better when frozen. ammo carried in my pockets on a hunt does not get that cold and I take it inside with me at the end of the day. |

Just a FWIW.
I went out and retrieved a bunch of the wads I used for cold testing these loads.
The CB0100-16, SP16 and the CB2100-12 wads looked pretty good for the most part. There were a few tears here and there but most were just fine. The SG16 wads were all torn to bits. The wad that held up the best was the DR-16.(I didn't record the numbers for the load using the DR16).
There was a lot of speculation over on SGW about the wad plastics not being able to handle the cold. These tests weren't in any way supposed to be absolute proof of anything beyond the performance of the individual loads in cold temps, but it certainly doesn't seem like the plastic wad has anything to do with the outcome. The primer/powder type/powder amount and payload seem to be the deciding factors. |
