About as fine an example of German gun-making as you'll see.
The rifle caliber is a bit of an oddball. But, get out the cerrosafe and take a chamber cast. Consult the Cartridges of the World for advice on a good parent cartridge. Make some shells, cast some bullets, work up a nice load, and you're good to go.
A combo gun like this is no end of useful.
Don't laugh. A friend took a moose back in '16 with a cape gun of similar vintage, making his own cartridges from scratch and shooting cast bullets. He had to make a replacement hammer for his gun, first. Something not necessary with this Stiegele. |

| According to Cartridges of the World, Frank Barnes; The rifle cartridge is a variation of the 9.5x47R. Bullet size varied from 9mm to 11mm. The dimensions weren't noted but the ballistics are similar to the 44-40. It looks like quite a work of art with a price to match. |

I agree with AmericanMeet. I looked at The Cartridge Corner. Found the dimensions in the metric charts. The critical measurements are the rim and base. Unfortunately rim THICKNESS is not listed but is also critical. When choosing a candidate for conversion, choose one with a base dia., the same or slightly smaller. All else can be altered, with more or lesser effort.
9.5 X47R rim dia; .583 base dia; ,513 case length;1.85
My usual case choice is often .348 Win, but is too large at the base for this situation. .45-70 Government seems to show prospects with a base dia. of .500.
A chamber cast is required as was mentioned. The cast should be supplied to the die maker. Attention should be paid to rim thickness as well, but it is easy to thin rims with a lathe, drill press, or even a small triangular file.
My first enquirey should be to ch4d. Their prices are usually most reasonable for odd calibers.
You are not out of the woods but time and effort can result in a pleasant shooting experience. |
