More like the rummy black hulls. I got 2 reloads out of them I test.
Need time to try different components. Friend bought half a pallet of them. He gave me them to see how they loaded. Old 16 Bill |

I have reloaded several boxes of both lead target and steel hunting loads.
My observation is that they are simply a Cheddite hull. |

John, that is my understanding also; just another Ched hull. However, it was stamped on the box I believe "Not reloadable". None of the other current 16ga ammo available has that on a box. Why a specific with the Brownings'? |

Now, I wonder...
First, I was given the hulls without a box.
Second, I have noted that many Cheddite hulls have an issue upon firing. The pressure distorts the brass at the rim. I think the hull design is allowing gas to get past the base wad.
Browning might be doing a CYA. |

John Singer,
I have 500 Cheddite green low metal head hulls that have 5 to 6 reloads on and mostly fired through my 1100 and they are not leaking gas by the basewad and distorting the metal head.
Neither do the Red Cheddite high metal head hulls, the purple Herter's hulls or the Winchester Cheddite hulls that I have.
Individual hulls do fail, but I haven't seen any actual failures of that type with any 16 gauge Cheddite hull.
However I am always willing to learn about this kinda stuff and won't say that it can't happen. If you have some pictures or can direct me to this information, I sure would appreciate it. |

Just a thought…
Maybe cut a Browning hull and a Cheddite hull in half to compare? Might be some revelations.., |

John Singer,
The link works. Thanks
I haven't seen any hull that looks like those two, but I will keep an eye out for it. |

I have fired said hulls thousands of times and not seen those types of failures. Other failure modes, yes.
Offhand it would appear the gun has a headspace problem with possible lockup or bolt issues. I’d take it to a gunsmith.
All the Best

Those shells were fired in an old Stevens 5100 SxS. The barrels are on face and the lock up is tight. It was inspected last summer when I had a gunsmith install a new firing pin. Those shells resize well and work fine in this gun.
Two flats of new Herters shells were sold to me by a friend whose Remington 870 failed to extract them due to the extractor slipping over the rim.
I will add that I have not observed this same issue with Federal hulls. |

It looks to me more like a very tight fit on the wad or a too deep crimp. I say this because I had one failure of a Federal hull that I attributed to a slightly oversized cork filler wad. Upon firing the hull got sucked into the barrel up to the forcing cone. That cheddite looks like it was trying to do the same thing. |
