Swampy: the trapping argument makes sense to me as well.
When I was just a kid in nowhere '60s NW Pennsylvania, every family I knew had at least one trapper in it, plying their trade in the local ditches, swamps and streams. For many adolescents and young men back there then, trapping was a source of income that allowed for some of the "niceties" of life (like gasoline for your junky little car, my brother's was a '64 Rambler wagon he paid $40 for). We'd head over to Mercer County (to the fur-buyer there) about once a week (usually friday evening after school & work) and turn coons, possums, and muskrats into fuel, beer, and cigarettes on a regular basis. I never smoked 'em, but the beer and the accompanying young women (that inevitably followed soon after the sale), were darn good fun. Simpler times then, eh?
An admission against self-interest, I'm sure. My goodness, how the world has changed. |

Yes it has. I ran a trap line, it was fun stuff. It’s a shame there’s no money in it now. |

I moved 5 grouse this morning, 3 of which I could have got off some good open shots, however, I was packing a rifle on an elk hunt! The first 2 startled me as they flushed separately and from different locations, out of heavy timber. |

Lloyd3,
When I was a young man I did some trapping also, payed for my shells and some other goodies. Very few of the kids today Trap, money is easier to come by today than when we were kids. I shot Fox in the head so the pelt would be perfect, we got more money for them that way. Trapping was actually a lot of work the kids today do not want to do.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave
