I notice on some old English doubles the safety is located to for down the tang and after pushing it off I have to move my hand forward to engage the trigger which I find annoying.I have not found this on the American or Italian ,German ,Belgium sxs shotguns I have owned over the years.I was wondering if there was a reason for this.

Possibly a safety feature to prevent the shooter from having their finger on the trigger when pushing the safety off.

AC,
While it is true some of the older Brit double guns had safeties in slightly different places most of this was due to the different manufacturers early individual engineering design. The most famous being the side safety on the Greener guns.
The American manufacturers were more standardized in their engineering design with the top side tang safety, so the safeties are more universally located, however there is some variance also and many of our early Double Guns here in the USA had no safeties at all. The only safety on the early Hammer Guns was not cocking the hammers.

all the best,

Dave I would never consider a greener cause of the safety location but love their lock up system which I see on a lot of German sxs shotguns.

The 16s are 65mm

The bullet is .318

My preference with a break-action is to leave the safety in off position, action open. When birds are expected, load the barrels, then as the birds rise or approach, close the action as the gun is being raised. this doesn't work if the gun has an automatic safety.
