Hello gents. Looking for a- 1 1/8oz recipe utilizing a federal hull and Herco powder. I have a plethora of both but having some difficulty dialing in which direction to go. I see that Alliant has 3 loads listed utilizing the SP16 wad which I have several of but I've read about severe powder migration issues and don't want to travel down that path if there are ways to avoid. Any recommendations/guidance are welcome. |

An old Alliant powder manual shows using the WAA16 wad at the same charge weight of Herco having slightly less pressure as the SP16. The Claybuster wad also is a bit slim but you can easily expand the base of the wad to help seal the pressure. Or use a nitro card and fiber filler wad. |

Thanks gents. I've spoke with Precision Reloading but they only go up to a 1 oz load with Herco (may need to stick with that). Ballistic products has a 1 1/8oz load utilizing their Z16 wad and herco powder but the recipe calls for a Cheddite hull and primer. I don't know what the pressure/velocity differences would be in the replacement of the Cheddite hull for a Federal and don't want to experiment without proven data. |

I would have no hesitation loading Cheddite hull data in a Federal hull. However, I'm no fan of Ballistic Products reloading data and would probably not use their data unless I sent samples to Tom Armbrust or Precision Reloading for pressure testing before shooting in any gun of mine.
Some years back I sent Tom Armbrust the same load in 2 1/2" Cheddite (RST), 2 1/2" Polywad, and the following 2 3/4" hulls cut down to 2 1/2" - Fiocchi, Federal and Nobel Sport. The velocities were all the same (Tom rounded to the nearest 25 fps) and the pressures all clustered around the same point except for the paper base wad Federals, which had about 500 psi less pressure than the other hulls as expected.
I always treated straight wall hulls the same no matter whose name was on them. |

Agree with FlyChamps. Send some in for testing if you have doubts. |

Cheddite data in a Federal hull, will create a higher chamber pressure in the Federal hull. Probably 1,500 PSI. You don't have to believe me but I just went through this using 3N37 powder. Not a big deal but the Federal hull has a higher basewad than the Cheddite hull and that does make a difference. |
