I've got an airweight Smith in my game bag anymore. Cheap (and light) insurance. |

Already been to grouse camp and back. I did pack something that I haven't included in my last 40 years of hunting in the Pryors. Myself and the boys all carried pistols (40 cal and above) because of reports of grizzly bears.

I carry a 44 Mag Ruger Redhawk in a Gunfighters Inc. Kenai chest holster in the early season when bears are being baited in the UP. Later I switch to a Sig M18 or Sig P365 for the (mostly) 4 legged varmints. Cheap insurance. |

Oldest son has the same Kenai rig for his Smith and Wesson the rest of us are packing on our belts.
I also carry buck and slugs for the O/U but dumping rounds and reloading may not be faster than pulling the pistol.
After reading what happened to those bowhunters in ID extra pistol rounds saved the day. |

Great pics, thanks for sharing. I’m not able to get out into the covers yet, probably won’t this year, so these posts have been good to keep the blood flowing.
At some point I’ll have to get out to the Midwest for birds…I’m liking all that flat land I see. Hills are nice to look at from afar, but a PITA to hunt. |

My grouse season ended, at least temporarily, yesterday. With the season closed in Michigan for the deer season, Wisconsin deer season opening Saturday, and me on the road for work this week, I'm done until at least the beginning of December.
Unless we get a lot of snow up north, (more than say 3-6") and then I'm done-completely-done for the season.
Birds this past weekend were no longer in family groups, and really spooky - yesterday I had three flush away from more than 60 yards off, the dog never got the chance to find them, and were were running silent - GPS only with a soft bell on the dog.
And not one woodcock. Very unusual. If most of the flights are still up north and this is a sign of a late freeze, then I might still get more grouse season in December! |

Yesterday deer hunting with my youngest son, he reported that something “like a pheasant” flushed from the brush down the trail. That’s a grouse I replied. “Did we bring a shotgun?” he asked. I handed him the 16 x 8mm. “Back trigger is the 16 ga, front trigger is rifle for deer and bear. “ He took it and off he went.
Half a hour later he was back at the truck, but no birds. Nonetheless, he was impressed. “What a great gun! I need to get one of these” he said. He doesn’t need to worry about that. His name is already on it today.

Not grouse camp anymore, obviously, but...2024 is shaping up to be a pretty good year after all. |
