I was shocked today as I was teaching my kid how to measure barrel length (run a rod down the barrel, mark, and measure). I was using the 26” inch 1953 Marlin 90 I had, only I was shocked to find the result was 24”. I am left with the possibility that 2-4 inches was cut off, however, this is the model type with separate barrels, which means someone would have had to replace the middle post. The gun shows no signs of that type of work having been done. Guess I need to barrow some choke gauges and check that too.

I also pulled the other 1950 Marlin 90 I owned to check it. The exact same barrel length. Did they measure the length differently in these models? Now this one is clearly been modified or not standardized. It has a raised rib, the middle bead removed, and a high viz added. It needed a new stock and butt pad and clearly had more use than the other.

I’d love to include pictures, but I’m not that savvy so if someone wants to share an email address in pm, I’d love to share pics and have added.

So, let this be a lesson for you. If you’re going to measure barrel length, make sure you remove snap caps first! They are both in fact 26”, but I’d still like to share pictures of the non standard gun to get some feedback.

Not trying to be critical but, I think the first lesson is to check to make sure the gun is not loaded before doing anything else.
