The million dollar question is how was it shipped ?
Meaning are you an FFL holder ? If not, did and FFL holder ship it for you ? If not, did you use a service like shipmygun ???
As of 2022 normal lay people (the party of us) were prohibited from shipping via UPS due to their rule changes.
|
An individual may ship a personally owned firearm directly to or from a manufacturer without needed to use a FFL, provided the manufacturer issues the shipping label.
On separate occasions, I shipped a Beretta and a Winchester directly to, and received from, the respective manufacturers via UPS without issue within the last few years. They issued the pre-paid shipping label to me, I put it on the box, and shipped it. In both cases, I was assured insurance was included, and they would replace if lost, or repair or replace the gun (at their discretion) if damaged. |

That is the difference. YOU did not ship it, they did. You were just the delivery person. If the gun was lost stolen damaged etc, they would have had to file the claim not you. Your name was nowhere associated as the shipper.
People have always been able to send a gun to the manufacturer and receive it directly back. That has not changed. It is UPS' rules about shipping changed. I have shipped guns to the manufacturer directly via UPS and had it (Marlin lever action) delivered straight back to my house. Had to sign for it of course. Also shipped handguns via FedEx overnight to a FFL before they changed their rules also. So unless I use shipmygun I cannot sell any of my handguns out of state. They can't go USPS.
Bud's gunshop has created a lucrative business (www.shipmygun.com) because the only other option that lay people have is the USPS and they are not the best solution anymore due to their internal issues. But without a 3rd party, it's all we have.
As an individual, you cannot ship the gun THROUGH UPS. There has to be a 3rd party. Stop and analyze what you are saying. It is just UPS what we are talking about.
As such my statement

Still stands.
Try and take a gun up to UPS without someone having issued you a prepaid label and see how far you get.
We just had to have a reasonably expensive (at least for us) shotgun dealt with under warranty. Cabelas handled it for us though. Shipped it to the East Coast, it then went back to Italy. Then back from Italy to the East Coast and then back to the Cabela's store where we picked it up WITHOUT another transfer, just proved who we were and out the door we went. Because it was a higher end gun, from an Italian manufacturer, Cabela's helped as a courtesy as it was a warranty issue and we bought the gun from them.
Had it been a US based manufacturer, I could have shipped it directly to them via USPS (or used shipmygun) and had it come straight back to the house. (or had them issue a pre-paid shipping label of course) and drop the gun off. But then you are at their mercy to follow up if something goes wrong. Shipmygun has a business reputation to protect, so they should help out with problems.
So yes we have done this all in the past. |

Gentlemen,
My Uggie Breech work & Gunstock showed up on my front porch this morning with a UPS sticker attached saying the receiver refused delivery, which I know is BS Mark never received delivery of the package. I am now contracting Doug Carpenter in Ohio to rechecker and add Silver Butt Clips to my Uggie stock.
Maybe the stock will get to him in Ohio!
At least my gun stock was returned to me here at home by UPS.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Take 2 hrs and drive up & drop it off. You'll know it got there unharmed, and you'll have a chance to meet Doug in person, he's a great guy |

Tom,
My wife wants to make the drive, I do not know if we are going to have the time, Doug indicated it is 2 1/2 hrs away from Pittsburgh. That is a 5 hr ride back and forth to just drop off the gun stock. Plus the gas, probably be easier just to mail the gun stock too Doug.
If the WR was going to be worked on, I would definitely make the drive.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

I wasn't arguing with you, I was clarifying how from my personal experience an individual is permitted to ship a gun through UPS or other shipper without using a FFL.
Thanks for detailing the ins & outs. |

I bought a shotgun on Gunbroker from a dealer on July 16th and I mailed a personal check and a copy of the FFL to them the next day after talking to the dealer. I wanted to save the 3.5% credit card fee on my purchase.
The dealer called me 10 days later saying he hadn't received my check. I assured him that I had mailed and he admitted that USPS wasn't the best in his area so we agreed to wait. I called him 5 days later and still no check. 5 days later when he still hadn't received it I emailed a copy of the FFL and gave him my CC! $175 fee! Ugh!
They shipped the gun via UPS the next day and said I should have it in three days and gave me a tracking number.
The dealer called me four days later and said he finally received my check, 25 days after I handed it to the postal worker! He wanted to know if he should send it back or just shred it? WTF, 25 days from Nebraska to Minnesota, It didn't take that long with the Pony Express!
I called my dealer and told him the gun had been shipped and told him the day to be looking for it. I kept looking at the tracking number and it said that UPS received it but that's all it said. 10 days later I called the dealer to see if he could see anything that I couldn't. He could only see what I saw but he started the lost shipment process. 16 days after being shipped it finally arrived, 37 days after I bought it!
I'm pretty gun shy to buy anything on line anymore, even Amazon takes 4 days to deliver! |

I just bought a gun and I shipped payment to the seller 2nd day air, and I got notice that he got it on the second day just like he should have. Great I think.
So I waited all week and called him 5 days after he got the payment to to see what's what and he says oh yeah I got, I'll get my girl to ship it out next week.
I sent him a bank check so there was no wait for it to clearbut it took him 10 days to send a shipping tracking number. Some guys just seem to run on half a tank and march to the beat of their own drum. |

ROMAC,
I only purchase guns from a vendor that I know is legitimate, sending money to an unknown vendor is very dangerous, you were lucky to get the gun at all. Never purchase from an unknown vendor.

Romac,
I take a rather skeptical view of unknown dealers, it’s possible that the seller didn’t even own the gun when you paid for it. Instead, he may have used your funds to purchase it himself, then sold it to you at a tidy profit.
I always pay the extra USPS tracking fee on important transactions and correspondence. It’s a minimal cost and puts the recipient in notice that you are paying close attention to the matter.
I’ve used Cabelas a couple times to purchase used guns, and they have been prompt and economical - no shipping fee, and you can inspect it when it arrives locally. If you reject the gun, they merely add it to their local inventory at no added cost. You may not test fire it however. They charge a daily storage fee (about a dollar I believe) for the annoying WA mandatory 10 business day waiting period (not including weekends or holidays) after BATF approval.

My purchase was from a legit shop, just slower than I'm used to. |
