I've experienced -30 with no wind up in Lake Placid, NY. The wiper fluid reservoir was frozen solid. We waited until it warmed up to -10 and then tried to go skiing. At the mountain the wind chill had brought it back down to -30. Halfway down the first trail the wife stopped. She had a tiny hole in her goggles so the cold air would get in and fog up the lens. Within seconds of her taking her mitten off to clean the lens she could not move her hand. I unzipped my jacket, stuck her hand in my arm pit and then worked on the goggles 10 secs at a time. We ended up sitting in a warming hut for a couple hours and buying new goggles. Made it down and she was done...most expensive one trail lift ticket I ever bought.

About 15 years ago I went duck hunting with a friend. It was -10 at the launch. After hunting a couple hours we picked up. I took my non-waterproof glove off to grab the dekes from the water. My hand was wet, so I didn't want to put it back in the glove...big, stupid mistake. In the 15 min boat ride back to the launch into the wind my fingertips started to feel like someone had smashed them with a hammer. It stayed like that for about 2 weeks, then the pads of my fingertips fell off. I had gotten pretty lucky.

Half century ago, hunted pheasants in cattails wearing pair of jeans. Noticed denim on side of left leg was frozen solid. My leg is still has no feeling in that patch today 50 years later.

Byron Whitlock: How much lead do you give those low fast 40 yd crossers?

TIA

Luckily this five stand had none of those this month. All of the targets were within thirty yards within range of the improved cylinder choke of the 870 I was shooting. I do have to admit it was a twelve gauge since that was the only thing Dad believed in. However I was shooting 1oz factory loads just like when I shoot my 16.

Brian Whitlock,

Using 1oz out a light 12 Gauge is my favorite Grouse and Woodcock load, easy on the gunner and deadly on the birds. I use this load in both my Westley Richards and L.C. Smith guns all the time, use SpredR loads most of the time, nothing more is needed unless shooting thru the big grape vines or edges of Hemlock trees.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

We had record setting temperatures here Sunday, so I spent a little time outside examining this one more closely...

Not a 16 but almost light enough to be one & in remarkable condition for it's age (early 1870s).
