I am sure some of you have seen this over on one of the other forum sites.
I am making old fashioned red oil. If you do a search, you will find numerous people do this as I am not the only one who really likes the old way of doing stocks.
This is alkanet root, soaked in BLO. This is after 3 months. 3 more to go. I also have alkanet root soaking in denatured alcohol which I started afterwards, and will be used for pre-coloring before I start the oil process.
After the hand rubbed oil process is done, the finishing coats of another witch's brew will be used. I gave my friend some beeswax and he made a concoction of 1/3 BLO, 1/3 beeswax and 1/3 Pure Gum Turpentine. Has to be the real stuff, not new synthetic turpentine. It will give a satin gloss finish and help protect the wood (the wax).
Alternatively, I might make the same concoction but substitute Tung oil for the BLO.
I am going to refinish all my Browning O/U's with this.
The 2nd picture is one the 525 stocks I am refitting to my Browning Citori 16's. I did this one with Tru-Oil over a red oil I had purchased. I am not happy with this so I will strip it and do it over

This is a Citori Hunter Grd 1 with the 525 stock slid on, the next 2 pictures show how I have to modify the headwork. The fitting is getting closer on the Grd 2 gun (all are 16's!!). I have to go slow so I don't mess it up.
I am debating whether to do the Grd 1 & 2 that I have (bought both on a STEAL !) or
the White Lightning my wife bought me for not dying on her.
I might just set it up for her so she has a really nice 16ga !
The 525 stocks, as is, are too dark for me. I want them to be the classic old red color that high end shotguns had.

Not done yet. Still a work in progress. You have to go a little at a time, fitting there, checking the back of the tang. Too much and it is ruined. It is slow work moving the radii back around so it looks like it belongs there.
That surface (headwork radii) have to be worked on in duplicate remember. A little on the right side, a little on the left. Making sure that I am keeping both sides balanced to each other. You can't fit one side then go back and do the other.
Citori stocks actually have the bearing surface where the red arrow is pointing. If you take a stock off that has been finished at the factory, there will some type of bedding at the corresponding place in the stock. If it is not bearing there, there is a risk of splitting the sides off as they are thin
Browning told me that a 525 stock could not be fitted to a regular action. As you can see, I am pretty close on this one. Once this one is done, 3 more to go.
Is it worth it. Yes. I cannot bend my hand due to an injury and the 525 stock is the tightest I can find. I shoot one of the Cabelas exclusive 525's in 12 for trap and a 20 for trap and whatever.
These are so I can have them in 16. At the time I started these I could not find an actual 525 16ga anywhere. Now they pop up frequently, however, I am already committed to these.
I have matching forends. The Hunter Grd 2 (silver nitride finish) already has the forend done on it.
The last picture shows a BT99 stock. The arrow is pointing at the bedding.
(disclaimer - I paused a video and screen captured this image for illustration purposes. credit to TGS Outdoors
I swiped the BT99 image from a post Steven Rademacher did on SBW as it was exactly what I needed for illustrating the glass bedding)
