I believe at this point, we have to assume that something has happened to Smith Long or his ability to access this website. I know that many of us have been in contact with him over that last few years to solve an issue for a new, former or current member. Though it might have taken a few weeks, s_long had always taken care of it and usually with a reply that was friendly.

To continue complaining would seem to be a useless endeavor.

What we need is a solution. Do we have a member or members that are well versed in websites or know someone that is well versed in websites?

I just might and I will contact this person and let you know what can be done, if anything.

I had said that I wasn't going to respond to this thread anymore, but I need to clarify a point for everyone.

Without the logon ID and password(s) that are used to access the software code, etc

OR

Permission and Intervention from the Owner(s) to the folks that are hosting the site to see if they can access the code, you may as well p*** into the wind.

I took care of the website for TireTown Corvette Club for a while. They had to give me where to logon to and the userid and password to get to the site.

Doing what needs to be done, in the grand scheme of things for someone with an IT background regarding the web, is not that hard.

Getting access is if not granted by the "king".

Have been following this discussion with interest. It has been a fresh breeze of info over these last years for me and i wish i was younger & more PC savvy to do something about its potential demise. 16ga usage came late in life for me and after i enjoyed my first one i wound up buying 2 more; its was like eating potato chips. My kids, who were raised with PC in school, and my wife who assisted the teacher in the PC class in HS are usually the ones bailing me out whenever there is a problem. I really wish i could get involved here to see this site stay active. Ironically, the site is just like the storied 16, everyone keeps mentioning the 16s supposed demise, and now this site dedicated to it is at the crossroads....

The last email I received from here came from, smith@16ga.com

Don't know if that would get anybody in contact with some one who might have an answer.

Tried that one 3 days shy of 2 months ago (12/16/25) no answer. I just sent another one.

Still nothing on this? When would the site just stop on it's own? Or would it?

My PM is still sitting in the Outbox, unread. Emails I sent are unanswered.

If someone is paying the bills, or it was paid ahead of time, it will keep running until the rent runs out. Then it will go away.

The domain name (16ga dot com) has been reserved until 2027-03-26

You can find this out by doing an Icann lookup and putting the website name in

https://lookup.icann.org/en

the entry was last updated on 2018-03-13

When drcook first suggested doing something different with this website I wasn't all that fond of the idea. But after this much time it is obvious that, for whatever reason, s_long is no longer looking after the website.

I am going to suggest that we start using the 16ga. Lovers (I wish it was named a bit differently) forum on SGW or the 16 Gauge forum under the 16ga.com Refuge on Shotgun Forums.

I believe that these forums are something to look into. Sooner or later this place will suffer some kind of issue and that will end the whole thing. Right now, no one new or members that changed their email, etc. can no longer sign on to this website.

Time to listen to drcook.

Just start using both, SGW and SGF. Double post. It is pretty easy to copy and paste

If usage goes up on SGF, it will give leverage to add a 16 ga loads sub-forum and maybe on SGW

I’m not much for website experience, but I’ve had some solid experience operating community boards. If I can help let me know.

I really wish S Long would pop in and show we are over thinking this.

It is not really hard to overthink this. 12/15/25, the PM to get EricB's ID activated after his other other quit working. As I have said multiple times, I also sent emails.

New people, 16 ga converts etc are simply losing interest in here. If you change your email, any of a myriad reasons, you lose access.

Still sitting in my "Outbox", unread, 5 days shy of 4 months. Even if he showed up tomorrow, I would be unapologetic. 4 months to gain access is simply unacceptable, especially seeing as he stated emphatically that he will not let anyone else help.

s_long is a gentleman. I have had several communications with him and he has always been friendly. I fear that something has happened to him that has stopped him from paying attention to 16ga.com. I don't think that he is purposely ignoring messages or this website.

Gentleman or not, the abject refusal to let anyone help is contributing to the demise of the site, if he is still around and just not paying attention to it.

Allowing someone to be a "moderator" doesn't change how the site is presented, structured etc. It would allow someone to approve people, etc.

If he is not around or incapacitated, etc, the refusal to allow anyone to help is still contributing to the demise.

Seeing as lots of folks like to invoke Doug's name, Doug allowed s_long to help. I am sure that Doug would be spinning in his grave to see the status of his brain child.

use this as a web search term

Quote:
what is it called when someone refuses to let anyone else help, share in the duties, management etc

So I would still be unapologetic. There are plenty of people (your self, others) that would have honored the original charter of the site Doug set up and just helped with the day to day maintenance.

The only viable explanation here is that s-Long is incapacitated.

If he is the gentleman that was described here earlier then...that is what has likely happened, and to take that to it's logical conclusion...our time here runs short.

Makes me a little sad, but that is the way of things everywhere. It's been a good ride here and I'm not jumping ship just yet but I'm now mentally prepared for the inevitable.

Until then, I'll just keep on checking in and posting where it's appropriate (gotta get that last donations' worth out of it, right?).
