Great thread, thank you Nick. Pulled a tick off just the other day. Mostly why I wait for the killing frost to get serious about hunting these days. But I've recently picked up a part-time job (machine maint guy at my shooting club) that will have me in the field at times so ticks will be a matter of when not if. Have used Permethrin when knowing the hunt is in a "red" zone.
Nick, for those not wanting to amass the (not common in the pantry) ingredients and cook up a batch of your recipe, you mention "...exactly the same thing that Icy Hot..." do you know if using it will work as well? |

Putz I have not tried the Icy Hot myself , one of the MD friends when I shared this with him made the comment " why didn't I think of this " , you know what you have made don't you ? I responded with the question what ?
This is the exact ingredients in Icy Hot , cloves and Capsaicin in a carrier which is Coconut oil and I throw a bit of Ghee in to thicken and make it a bit more as one would say have an affinity for the extraction of the chemicals in the spices.
Those of us that have an adverse reaction to the chemical poison tick repellent simply has to do otherwise, DEET , makes my tongue swell and shuts off my passage ways , Permethion makes me sick as a dog , as I am out in the ticks every time I walk out the door I had to develop something that works.
Jeanne and I slather up head to toe every day when we come in for extended periods of time we strip off throw clothes in washer and get clean clothes .
But we might have ticks crawling on us but we don't have them biting us even though we can scrape them off our clothes.
I simply could not squirrel hunt in the summer without the goop to put on.
Best regards Nick |

Not wanting to get all "Twilight Zone" here but...if you're interested in how Lyme's Disease became the problem that it now is, get and read a copy of the book "Bitten, the secret history of Lyme's disease" by Kris Newby.
Quite an eye opener... |

Bill I currently have somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 Guinea , they do a good job at the tick population around the house but they only venture out about 200 yards at the most , I have lots more ticks that the birds don't touch.
One thing that a few folks were doing ( illegal of course ) is that the people kept trail cameras out year round, the deer were getting huge balls of ticks around the ears and head region.
The placement of a food source with that source covered with Ivermectin which then is consumed by the deer has yield great results of ticks dying and falling off.
For the time the treatment is active any tick biting a deer dies.
Curious thoughts.

Yeh I know !!!
A farmer I know in Nebraska that has found the boxes of ticks dropped from aircraft.
Can say whatever but this is getting real.
Goop yourself up before venturing out
