Gentlemen,
Yesterday I picked up another Ideal grade L.C. Smith 16 gauge gun in very good shape. Has real sharp engraving on it, the gun was built in 1940 and still has 2 9/16" Chambers on it, so I will use 2 1/2" shells in her. Picked the gun up for very reasonable money as far as Smith guns go, the gun is being shipped to my FFL dealer as we talk. Gun has DT, choked M/F original, engraving is still perfect, 28" Barrels with SSP. A real nice later made L.C. Smith Ideal Grade double gun.
Another sweet 16 L.C. Smith double gun!
all the best,

| Ive always liked the Ideal grade. Looks like most of the case colors are there? I always thought they went to 2 3/4 inch long before 1940. Looks like it has ejectors too? |

Savage16,
This is why we always recommend that a purchaser find out the exact Chamber size before purchasing, not all the 16 and 20 gauge guns were built with 2 3/4" Chambers after 1936. Some of these gus were even special ordered with 2 9/16" Chambers by the purchasers. At any rate I use 2 1/2" shells in all my classic guns, except for the 12 gauge L.C. Smith guns. The ejectors came standard on the Ideal Grade Smith guns, to bad because I like extractor guns for Grouse Hunting best.
all the best,

Byron,
Although most graded L.C. Smith guns came with ejectors some did not, you were lucky and got one set up for Grouse & Woodcock hunting, I did not ask if my Ideal gun had ejectors or extractors, and it was not listed in the sales agreement. I took for granted that it had ejectors.

| Similar to the one I had. I sold it to a PA Gunshop for twice what I had in it. It was pushing 7 pounds so off it went but I couldn’t argue what I paid, I knew I could flip it. |

AC,
I just reviewed the pictures of my new Ideal Grade L.C. Smith double gun, the breech work is marked FW (Feather Weight) E (Ejector) a real nice later made Ideal Grade double gun for sure. I was hoping it was an extractor gun for my Grouse hunting, however these ejector Smith guns are fine engineering that never really cause any problems.

AC,
Although the Ideal grade L.C. Smith guns are the entry level graded L.C. Smith guns most of them are really nice high quality guns, especially the FW Ejector guns. They were definitely a very popular L.C. Smith gun with 26,686 of them being made and sold. Only 17% of them were 16 gauge guns however, so they are much harder to find in pristine condition. 18% of them had the Single Sight Plane like mine, that comes to 4,886 Ideal guns with SSP, so they are still round, most not in good shape however because this gun with DT was sold for only $37.50 back in the day, so that most American sportsman could afford to purchase them. Finding an Ideal grade gun in pristine condition is getting harder and harder to accomplish.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

WJ,
Thanks for the nice well wishes I definitely plan on using it this coming season in the Grouse woods! Seems to be taking a long time to get to my FFL, I start to worry when it is coming from Montana, most of the carrier's ship thru Chicago and a lot of guns disappear going thru that big city! Had a fine #4 L.C. Smith gun stolen out of the UPS truck in that area, the Secret Service recovered the gun, it took a year to get the gun back to me.
all the best,
