I'm looking at one of these. Mid '70's proof marks (haven't seen them) and a little utilitarian looking but it does have the English grip with no cheek piece. I've been looking at a Joseph Harkom 12ga. 2 1/2" which appeals to me more, but it is a 12 ga. after all and the Merkel is a 16!
What loads will the Merkel handle? Understanding that it is 6 1/2 lb gun and I don't want to go crazy. Will it handle 1 1/8 oz loads? Kind of thinking of gun with a little more "oomph" for pheasant. Also, my 5'15" 16ga. sxs WP&son is a little light for a lot of shooting on the skeet field.
Thanks!

Merkels have stout bolting systems (double underbites, greener crossbolt, sideclips). They can handle anything that you can. I have a 1620 that I shoot 1 1/8 oz loads with. It is more of a question of how much can you take than what the gun can take. |

I've got a 47E and a new 1620. Put what ever you want into it. Great guns that will last forever.
I've got the 47E choked Skt1 and Skt2. Works well with a low brass load in the first barrel and a high brass Fiocchi GP in the second over the dogs.
The 1620 was fit with Briley choke tubes. |
