I just inherited a double barrel 16ga. from my late Grandfather. Its a field grade gun nothing fancy, but it's priceless to me. The markings on it are as follows.
Left side of the receiver it says:
-SPRINGFIELD-
MANFACTURED BY
J.STEVENS ARMS COMPANY
CHICOPEE FALLS,MASS.U.S.A

Top of the left barrel:
PROOF TESTED 1 GUGE

Top of the right barrel:
SELECTED FORGED STEEL

Serial Number: E36725

I'd like to hunt with it this year, but I'm not sure which ammo it takes (2 1/2" or 2 3/4"). Did all American 16 gauges use 2 3/4"? How can I find out?

A guy at Shotgun News just e-mailed me back and said it's a model 315. He also stated any gunsmith should be able to tell me what the bore length is.

Any ideas?

A simple chamber length gauge can be made with a fired shell with a wad insereted into the mouth backwards so that the shot cup goes in first. Insert the wad until it is flush with the mouth of the shell. Insert it into the chamber. If it goes in all the way it is 2 3/4". If is stops short it is most probably a 2 9/16th or perhaps 2 1/2" chamber.

The other method involves a mechinist rule and a bore light. Insert the rule until it reaches the beginning of the forcing cone and read the measurement to the end of the chamber.

Method one is the fastest while method two is the most accurate.
