 Hi, was looking at a Merkel M8 in 16ga, do any of you have any thoughts on this gun? Good, bad, pro con. How does it compare to other Merkels? Whats a good price for one?

They're a damn nice gun, if you can live without ejectors. Quite a bit nicer than current producion.
These days 12s go for $800-1000 and unfortunately the "16 ga fever" premium is about 50%.

I recently traded a model 8 that I had been playing with back to my dealer for a minty A5 Sweet Sixteen. We looked at both as roughy 1100 dollar guns. My 8 was a non-ejector in very good shape. If I could have got the stock bent far enough up I might still have it.
I have had Merkels from the 50's and 70's and about the only thing I think was possibly a bit better with the older guns was the case coloring. My 1620 had problems with the case color coming off in streaks. Maybe it's my acidic sweat, and I do use guns pretty hard. Now that I have the metal situation stabilized, I'm pretty happy with my 1620. Mechanically it's a tough little gun.
On another site you mentioned the gun had ejectors. I didn't realize that model 8's ever came with ejectors. Are you sure that's not a 47E you're looking at? |

I have Merkel from the 30s~05, and I've disassemble and reassembled at least 40 more in my lifetime. I find the new entry level guns are made and fitted just as well as the old, some might be even better comparing the tooling marks left on the internal parts, I also find the way the new stocks are inleted is much better than the old.
I will say the higher grade those are custom hand made guns, specially the sidelocks are finished much nicer, and thats understandable.
The M8-2 from the late 80s and early 90s are fitted with ejectors and some also have single select triggers like the 47e. |
