Laughing Laughing No, my friend saw this one and decided he wanted one too.

I also was considering selling this one (to him possibly) as I mentioned earlier in this post and getting one with straight grained wood for myself. So we were looking for either one of us.

I posted photos of this one a couple weeks ago on Shotgunworld.

I know that's a bit confusing but true.
He has purchased one now and I'm keeping this one. Found! Wink

That is one exceptional piece of wood. Did you actually purchase the gun from GSI or through a dealer?

Yeah.
I spoke directly with GSI and they sent me photos of several. The others had wood I really did not like at all. My friend either.

I chose this one and bought it through Rick Stokes (Stokes Classics) for the same price as any new 1620.

From what I hear.....Merkel in Germany only uses straight grained wood. They believe in it's longevity and solidness. GSI has the upgraded, burly woods made for them, in Germany, as a special order.
I don't know why they didn't charge more.
They showed me a very similar (even nicer) 280 recently that I stupidly passed on.
However, I do understand their thinking on the staight grained wood. I actually like it very much and that is exactly why I was thinking of switching out guns.
