For a 16ga. upland hunter, what do you all think is the best truck gun/backup gun to bring for long trips? You know, something cheap you can throw behind the seat so that if it was somehow stolen, it would be no big loss. A cheap 16 pump? A 20? A 12? Maybe even a single shot?

I have two that fit the truck gun discription. I have a 16ga Rem. Mdl. 11 with a full, mod, and ic barrel and an 11-48 16ga with a mod barrel. They work super and no one gives them a second look. They also shoot well and have proven to be pretty dependable.

I would vote for the 870 or a 37--kinda a tossup Shocked

The 870 or Ithaca 37 are good ideas. Either one can be found in pawn shops in a varriety of gauges and configurations.

Another idea is to check the gun auction sites. A few years ago I found a Wards Western Field (aka Mosberg). It is a very nice pump in 16 ga that is a joy to shoot and didn't cost a whole lot either. In fact a few months ago I saw another one, just like the gun I bought, that had been updated with a black synthetic stock and forend. Now that would be a good truck gun. You wouldn't have to worry about the stock getting beat up.

Can you tell me about the mod.11-48. There is one in a local shop just like you described., for $285. It has hardly any scratches on the loading chute,but well used.With the bolt locked opened the bolt rattles around when i turn it over. Is that normal?

I just went to my cave and shook the 11-48. It rattles a little with the bolt open. I put my finger on the bolt face and can feel a little movement back and forth. That is where the rattle in mine is coming from. The price is about what I paid for mine. Scheels in Great Falls, Montana has a plain barrel for $400. Last year mine was purchased from them for $295. and it has a very nice vent rib. Looks like 16's are in favor again.

Thanks for the info. This one is a plain bbl. I believe one could get it for 250, maybe a bit lower,but already have more than i need. May try to see if my son would go for it when he gets back from his trout fishing/camp out this week end.

model 12, 16ga, plain barrel, that's had plenty of experience already.
Or an 870. cheap is cheap; buy something of quality that's been used.

The definition of "truck gun" means something totally different here.

When I load my stuff later this week for my bi-annual trip to Colorado for grouse I will be packing a 1935 vintage Fox Sterlingworth brush model choked IC and Mod and a 1939 vintage Sterlingworth field model choked Mod and Full.

Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun.

Oh yeah I'll also load up my 2005 vintage Llewellin Setter. He sure is pretty but man is he dumb. I'm hoping this is going to be his break out year, I don't know if I can handle another puppy year.
