I was wondering if anyone would know the minimum breech pressure required to operate a 16 gauge A-5 action? Light load ring setting prefered.

These guns are not pressure operated. They are recoil operated.
Recoil is generated by the mass of the ejecta and the velocity that it is accelerated to.
On most of my 16's I find that a 1 oz load cylces the gun if it is accelerated to at least 1150 fps. A 7/8 oz load needs to be hotter, 1225 usually works.

Not really dependent on pressure, but rather the recoil impulse. I had one that would cycle 7/8 oz. at ~1200 fps. Sold the gun.  |

Thanks for the information. You are both correct as far as recoil opererated cycle, just was not to sure on how to word the question. I suppose I will contine with my trial and error method of finding the lightest load possible to cycle the action. I presently fire a Federal hull with 1 oz lead and it works fine. Remington hulls that I load with 7/8 oz lead and 20 gauge wads are a pleasure to shoot in my Browning Feather but are lacking for the A-5.
With the amount of different hulls,wads,powders, primers and stacks of reloading receipes tucked away under the bench, I am sure I will find my perfect load in time.

I'm always looking for a lighter load as a lot of the shooting I do is inside 30 yards and the price of lead is high. 7/8 oz is plenty of shot most of the time.

Jeff. I ques I should have worde that different. In looking for what is the lowest chamber pressure to cycle an A-5, wouldn't that depend on a lot of variables? Each gun to cycle on different loads depending on age of springs, any oil on tube? I'd think the besr thing would be to experiment with different loads for your personnal shotgun. Also can depend on weather when hunting. |

oldhunter,
I agree completely about how each of these guns is a little different due to age, wear, dirt and lube. A load that will cycle my gun may not cycle someone elses.
But I think it may be worth knowing what others have been able to do and trying to duplicate the results with a different gun. Heck it just might be enough incentive to get some of us to clean out the 55 years worth of dirt!
