I bought a used 16ga Uggie earlier this year. Between dog training and one hunt with it I hadn't been able to hit a live bird with it until today. So I thought I better document my accomplishment for the the whole world to see.

I had the checkered butt cut off and added a recoil pad so the balance of the gun(26" barrels) was altered. I hollowed out the stock some about a week ago and it has helped but it still doesn't balance near the hinge. But it no longer feels butt heavy and I'm shooting it a little better.

Only one bird, but I only had one shot at a covey of huns. Had a covey of about 30 turkeys but no permit so I had to let them all live. Smile

Congrats Nut! Good looking dog and gun! It'd be hard for me to cut off the checkered butt, however, if it helps the handling of the gun I'd go for it!

Matt:

Thanks for the complement on the dog and the gun. This gun had a rather pointy toe on it. Just dug into me. Obviously styled like an english gun for driven shooting. Plus it needed more LOP for me.

Mine needs a bit more length of pull and just an oomph more drop also. Putting a pad on does the trick. I've been using a slip on pad recently which works great, but obviously doesn't look as nice. Although, it does allow me to keep the checkered butt unaltered. I haven't decided which way to go yet.

If not for the toe I may not have cut the stock and just used the slip on. My gun is a Parker Hale import. The LCS guns are more user freindly when it comes to stock dimensions. More LOP, more drop, more cast, I could use more of all of them.

I wasn't aware the Parker Hale guns had different dimensions. Another nice thing about Uggies is that if you have to do some sawing or sanding on the stock to make it fit, there's no real reason not to.

Actually, lengthening the stock does alter the drop, since it angles downward front to back, albeit very marginally, which is all I need anyway. I only needed about 1/16 more drop. I put a slip on pad with cardboard inserts underneath and it really does the trick. If I put a permanent pad on, it will have to be at least 1" thick. I like your idea about the pitch adjustment also. Doesn't the pitch change whether the gun shoots high or low?

Excellent info Tony, thank you. I especially like the pitch exercise. I'll give that a try. I'm anticipating trying my hand at installing a leather pad on my Uggie, which would be a perfect time to make any pitch adjustments. It won't be the easiest of jobs either, as the heel is somewhat radiused, and the face is slightly cupped. I will have to sand or rasp it absolutely flat before making any adjustments.
