I think Golfswithwolves hit the nail right on the head. Remington is doing no one any favors by slapping 16 gauge barrels on a 12 gauge receiver. I don't know if Browning is doing the same thing with their 16 gauge BPSs, but I have felt one and like all BPSs it is heavy for an upland gun.

For the umpteenth time, these BPS 16 ga guns are built on the existing 20 ga frame. That was the suggestion I bounced off Denny Wilcox At Browning in the spring of 2006 and that is how they made them. They weigh the same as a new 16 ga Model 37 Ithaca, from around 6.75 to just under 7 pounds. That is a far cry from the new 16 ga Remington 870 and 1100 models that heft at 8.2 pound and over.

The average classic American double that made our 16 ga so popular with our granddads and made the gauge the queen of the uplands weighed an average of 6-3/4 to 7 pounds with few exceptions. This weight class gun swings great, carries easy, sucks up the recoil of the average American 1 to 1-1/8 ounce hunting load, and is not tiring even for all day hunts like those of our forefathers regularly took part in.

We are bigger, healthier, longer living, and more affluent than those guys ever were. However, the one thing they did not do is whine about a few ounces of weight to on side or other of the average 6-3/4 pound mark or turn up their noses because they were gun snobs with fool ideas about proper gun weights drummed into their heads by the even bigger and more foolish British gun snobs.

If 6-3/4 to 7 pounds is too much gun for the average modern uplander to tote, he'd better trade in his light weight hunting boots for ballet slippers and a tu tu. That way, he might get his fat butt back in shape enough to keep up with his dogs... unless he's hunting over a shitzu. Rolling Eyes

Come on guys, this is not rocket science... well almost not rocket science. It's kinda like it, but... Oh skip it. Who cares about rocket science but rocket scientists anyway.

There ya go, 16 GG taking our brothers to task just because they prefer the fine field qualities of the shitzu...

I guess you'll be after us BASSET HOUND hunters next. Don't go there...I've never seen a dog that could find more birds than "ol' Rummy" my faithful hound. You pick on the basset, and this thread is gonna get UGLY real quick!! Laughing

Seems to me if memory serves correct that Golfswithwolves has just recently came home from duty in Iraq. So he was prolly busy and didn't realize how you told the Browning guy to put the BPS 16's on a 20 ga. frame. That should disqualify him from the "umteenth gang" Rolling Eyes BTW, How about a few thousand words on American physical fitness trends in the past 125 yrs. as they relate to hunters and shooters that would make all of us other members tuesday evening real enjoyable Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Dog gone it 16GG don't you pay attention. You are at least a half pound heavy on your weight "estimate" for the "Classic American 16 gauge Side by Side" those being the A H Fox, Parker O and #1 frame, Dan LeFever and (Oh the shame of it) the L C Smith guns.

Yeah, I'm interested in hearing some more b....., I mean enlightened discussion on how owning a sweet carrying, joy to have, light weight shotgun is a bane upon the physical fitness, abilities, and, now, I guess fashion sense of the modern American hunter. I guess all the humping of weapons and armament I did in 21 years in the US Marines doesn't qualify me to tell you less is more when you got to hump it around.

I'm going out to get my tu tu tonight as I guess I am light in the loafers for not wanting to hump an extra pound around when I don't have to.

Golfswithwolves: you get a pass brother. Thank you for your service.

Hey GG:

The weight of the gun one more time has NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING ABLE TO PACK THE THING . We can all pack the 8 lbs guns we JUST CANT SHOOT THE DANG THING AT THE END OF THE DAY , WORTH A HOOT.

Where as I can shoot the light gun at the end of the day very respectiable indeed .

Come hunt with us and you will soon be shedding those heavy guns , that is if you can make it thru the day , I can with no problem but several I have taken cannot make the cut , They sure benifited from the light guns the second day choosing not to pack the heavy's the second day. These people were most all athalete's or lifers in the military.

Regards Charles
