This is a Picture of what we were hunting in , I took this standing up at head high . We didnt hunt the cattails this trip , it would have been too hard on Dave's son Dillion, so we hunted this kind of stuff instead , it sure held lots of birds but was hard to get up on them .

We left right after work , getting out of here at 5 PM driving thru the night arriving in Mobridge SD at 8 AM .

We headed north to the Casino at Cannonball driving another hour north arriving around 11 AM ( we stopped at the Grouse haunt and we chased them for a bit before giving up with lots of sentry's sitting in the trees )

We arrived at the Casino and went to the convenance store to get the tribal tags , then we headed north to Cannonball , I had never hunted this far north on the Reservation , having been told this to be the mecca of the Reservation for Pheasants.

We cast about attempting to find just where we can hunt on the map compairing this with what the Director of Game and Fish had told me where to go.

We finally find the Farms that we were going to hunt it was about 1 PM by this time , we see lots of birds going in and went down to the bottoms away from the standing corn , the picture above is what we were hunting in , lots of birds but could not get a shot at many , jump 150-200 yards out of range at this time Dave said Whew more birds in a few minutes than he had seen in his lifetime of growing up and hunting Pheasants in Iowa.

I managed to put 2 birds in the bag at this place , I opted to get out of there and go elsewhere , we seen approx 2 thousand + birds according to Dave in just a 2 hour period of time , but only 2 birds to count for , not too good a place to me the birds were flying up into the standing corn or down in the bottoms in stuff they could run in , I thought I could find a better place .

We went back down around Fort Yates and found a place I thought had not been hit for it had no grain around it and sure enough this is where we killed the rest of the birds for a total of 9 this day , Dillion and Dave were having a hard time getting up on birds in this area as well, this was a bottom that had a good size creek running thru it with deep sides on the banks, the birds were going to the other side to get away from us , the creek was frozen in places hard enough to cross but not many , I found one place that we could cross everytime and that was a Beaver Dam .

I found this when I shot a bird and it fell across the creek , well when the bird hit the ground , Peach took off and jumped in the creek and crashed thru the ice , I was peeling coat and putting all my equipment down in a hurry while watching Peach finally break thru all the ice to the other side , then was the problem of the steep bank , but you know what that little dog crawled up that bank like a champ.

Peach didnt even shake , she run to where the bird was still quivering and dispatched the bird then and only then did she look at me and shake , then picked up the bird and run to the bank where she had crossed .

Peach looked at the water and was not coming back across and I sure could not blame that little dog , she sit the bird back down on the ground and shook again then looked at me for guidance .

I told her to bring the bird along and we would look for a place to cross up stream, that little dog packed that bird along that stream bank right with me a full 1/4 mile or slightly more untill we came to the Beaver Dam and across the dam Peach came and put this bird in my hand .

Dave made the comment that was increadable and Peach was a humdinger indeed , Dave got to witness this 3 more times that day with Peach doing the same thing each time , later to find out that Dave had spent a lot of dollars for Rusty (his setter ) and Rustys training , just to find out that Rusty would not find Dead nor would he retreave anything but he would point real well but that is it , would do nothing else.

Dave went across the Beaver Dam and we made the attempt for Dillion to cross , he got afraid and came back to my side I told Dave I would take Dillion with me and go downstream and try to find another crossing that was easier to cross , so off we go we went about 50 yards and Peach went on point , I told Dillion to walk up and kick the bird up , Dillion marched up there and up came a Rooster I was to the right of Dillion and the bird crosse about 20 yards in front of me , Dillion dropped this bird inside of the 25 yard mark with Peach retreaving the bird to hand , this was one happy little boy indeed , this would be the only Pheasant that Dillion would take on this trip , Dillion also would go on to take a Sharptail as well .

We took a total of 9 birds this first day .

more posting later on gotta go hands hurting used them too much today.

The second days hunt began at almost the crack of noon , " Dave and Dillion are not early risers"
we decided to go down around Fort Yates where we had had some very good luck on the previous
2 hunts , we got down there and found all the corn taken out with lots of birds down in the bottoms ,
the wind was howling at 40 MPH it was not a fun time that day I managed to kill 3 birds and that was
the days take.

This is a pic of Dave and the Van , pretty thick cover , this is not my favorite place to hunt late season .

The cover is real thick overhead but thin underneath so the birds can run like a race horse in this place, you just cannot get up on them in this stuff .

But Dave said that he seen so many Pheasants on this trip in just a few minutes that it overshadow's all of the birds he seen growing up in Iowa all those years .
