What Quail ya going after ?
If it's Gambrel or California Quail I would use high base 1 oz 7-7 1/2. Also have some # 6's with ya. Lots of long shots with these birds. They don't like to sit long and can ,run & run and wear out a dog real fast. If you get a limit of these birds you have worked hard to get them.
They don't sit long & watch the back door. They are great for holding till ya pass and then flush.
Once ya bust up the covey, singles can be fun.
We enjoy a Season here in Arizona that starts Oct.15 and usually ends Feb. 15. |

Farm raised birds #8's at standard velocity will work nicely. For wild birds you might step up to 7.5 plated load, if they are flushing early.
Go get some birds! |

I shoot 7/8 oz of #8s first half of season and 1 oz of 7-1/2s second half. I am hunting wild Bobs in the Panhandle of Texas. Velocities for both are 1200 fps or less.
Best,
Mike |

Where are you in South Carolina? I live in downtown Columbia and work in Lexington.
Without getting too specific where do you hunt? |

16shell--
I'm in Texas, but this past February I hunted with my brother-in-law in South Carolina--he's a part-time guide for a quail preserve hunting area near Orangeburg. I used 16 ga. Federal #8, std. velocity (1165 fps?) and picked up 24 birds out of 33 put out. Great time! Used my Citori Feather. |

My vote would start with vintage-low-velocity-shells. I really like what Poly-Wad produces but RST and Kent are spoken of highly as well. 7/8oz 7 1/2 or 8 will do just fine and help your Elsie in her old age. |

I hunt Wild Birds in South Texas and have had TOO MANY wounded birds with # 8. I shoot only 7 1/2 or 6's now. Many good Quail hunters ae using 6's because of the extra energy and kill power. |

When I hunt Blues in New Mexico I shoot an ounce and an 1/8th of #6s.

When hunting Gambels Quail in AZ I use 1 oz. of #7 1/2's or #7's, depending on time of year and how wild the birds are.
I also agree with Leighton on the #8's, too many cripples.
