Hello All, I am new to the site, but love shooting various 16 gauge shotguns. One of the most fun guns that I shoot is a long tang round knob Browning Superposed in 16 gauge. I have not seen any other of these guns. Anyone else have a 16 gauge Superposed? Enjoy the day, Mike

Can you post your gun's serial number. I've never heard of a superposed 16 gauge. I don't think any of us have. It's possible the gun was converted at some point. The serial number will confirm the year and gauge the gun was made in. Thanks.

Very interesting...the elusive, even mythical, Superposed 16ga.

Please, you HAVE to post pictures!

Sounds like you have quite a conversation piece there, skeettx.

Ned Schwing's book on the Superposed contains Browning's charts on "worldwide production by gauge 1930-1977" and "yearly sales reports".
There is no mention of a 16 gauge Superposed ever being produced for public consumption. It seems that numerous "one of a kind" superposed guns were created for the Browning family or for special exhibitions in Europe and North America, but again Schwing never mentions a 16 gauge configuration.

I am very interested to hear more about your Browning. My grandfather sold Brownings, Winchesters, Remingtons, and Rugers for 20+ years and the Superposed was his favorite. Although, he lamented the fact it was never offered in the 16 gauge variety. He shot a Superposed for trap and skeet, but when he was after pheasants he carried a 16 gauge Model 12. That was my introduction to the "queen of the uplands" moniker.

I have heard that John Browning's son Val had one built on a modified 20 ga frame for his personal use by FN, but that one is in a museum collection somewhere. Please do not ask me where. The gun is said to be the inspiration for the 16 Ga Citori, which is also built on a modified 20 ga frame. A truely good idea is eternal.

Hello All, the Superposed that I use in 16 gauge does NOT have Browning factory barrels, they are CORDY barrels and must have been made in the 50s. They have a Simmons Rib. They fit the gun quite well and are Skeet and Skeet choked. Still, I have never seen another 16 gauge Superposed, does anyone else shoot one? Thanks, enjoy the day, Mike

So it sounds like aftermarket barrels fitted to a superposed frame? Possibly a 20 ga. frame as a 12 ga frame would be heavier? Would be interesting to see some pictures.

Col Charles Askins had one made for his wife. The standard barrels were cut off and a pair of Model 12 sixteen gauge barrels were fitted into the monoblock. Simmons added a rib for him. This gun is in Cody (I believe)

First you are going to have copy the exact web address where the pictures are posted (like smugmug or flicker).

Then just use the "Img" button above like this:

If you do not have a host site to post the pictures, email them to me and I will post them for you.

My email is dabaco@sbcglobal.net

We are dying to see a 16 ga. Superposed!!! Talk about an "avis raris"!!!!

I don't think you are going to find to many other people shooting a 16 ga. Superposed. I am curious, how did you acquire this gun? What is this gun's story?

best,

David

Call Browning and ask to talk with the Browning Historian, Glen H.Jensen . Give him the serial # and very shortly he wil look it up and call you back if a Browning import and sold as a regular gun. There are Browning Superposed out there that will not have any information. I am told these may be exposition guns or have entered the US through sources other than Browning.
In any event, this is the only way to determine if your gun is 16 gauge Super originally, all the rest is pure speculation.-Dick

I know I care. I would like to see pictures of the gun, markings and hear the story of how he obtained the gun.
