Been using TreWax for years. Ran across it a decade ago at an Ace Hardware and, for me at least, it's yet to be outperformed by anything I've tried. Thought it was just some off-brand, but apparently nearly every Ace store carries it, and it's very well thought of ... or at least that's what a woodworker friend at work tells me.

Thomas Vieth and Greg (gjw) over on the shooting sportsman sent me some questions, and we chatted. Tom and Greg both tried it and are loving it.

Hell's bell's ... I actually knew something useful. Who knew? Razz

I need help, recently I had my Elsies stock refitted and the smith got carried away and gold plated the side locks. It looks like electroplating. I'd like to go back to the worn case hardening that looked almost like a coin finsih after nearly 70 years of use.
How can I best do this? Its an Ideal Grade so it does have some engraving which I'm reluctant to smooth out. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks, RevDoc. My 16 NID (cicrca 1940, I believe) has got what looks like years of oil & wax buildup on the stock. Will pick up some Murphy's today.

after the Murphy's soap cleaning (which will remove old flaked varnish)
