I AM PLANNING A HUNTING TRIP IN OCTOBER FOR QUAIL. NATURALLY THE CITORI 16GA WILL BE MY PRIMARY GO TO GUN. I PLAN TO BRING A
BACKUP GUN , ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT ALL THE
FTF'S. MY PLAN IS TO BRING MY CITORI 28GA. I HAVE SHOT A FEW ROUNDS OF SKEET WITH THE GUN BUT I AM CONFUSED ABOUT THE BEST
SHOT SIZE. YES, I KNOW THIS A 16GA SITE BUT WAS IN HOPE PICKING
MORE EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGABLE BRAINS.

THANK YOU,

GLENN

Take another 16 ga and then you only need one set of ammunition.....

Using one gauge does eliminate a lot of kludge you have to drag along otherwise. Flying with guns can bring it's own set of problems as well. I used to worry a bunch about having two or more guns along for a trip, but, of late I've found that's just what it was-worry, about mostly, nothing. Often, a friend is along with a spare or three, if you hired a guide, most have a backup, and if you bring a double barrel gun with two triggers, you actually have two guns along, anyway.

Usually my Darne 12 makes road trips with me. I wouldn't hesitate to bring either of my 37 pumps for a solo trip, as well. I don't fly anywhere, and I suppose if I was going to Africa, I might have to bring a backup. But, doing so has been a waste of space and effort most of my life.
Best,
Ted

Hello Glen, for the 28, use #8 if you are a quick shooter and use 7 1/2 if you are a slow shooter. Others agree? Enjoy the evening, Mike

two 16 ga citoris in my safe for road trips - no worries Wink (although last trip to Kansas in January I toted along 6 guns and used 5 - one a 12 for geese).

I would take the 28 (used to use a 28 for quail a LOT) and load 8s in the skeet and 7.5s in the ic barrels. Just don't pull that VP trick Exclamation

I use 7's, 7.5's or 8's in my 16 and in my 28 for quail. All three sizes work well on the relatively short shots here in the South. If shots are a little longer I lean toward using 7's or 7.5's.

Before I got my 16 last December I shot my 28 whenever I went quail hunting. But my 16 is a Joseph Lang hammer gun with replacement damascus barrels by James Woodward - there's just something "right" about shooting quail with a hammer shotgun built in 1866.

I always bring my 28 as backup if I need one. Since I drive to all my hunts carrying the extra gun and ammo is not an issue.

I have always used a little shorter barreled gun when hunting grouse. I like a straight grip gun as it is easier to wield with one hand as your bending back the brush (at least for me). Always found 8's to be best. My favorite gun is a 16 gauge Suhl S x S (guild gun) with 25" barrels choked Sk1 and a loose modified. My back up is my old 1932 Sauer 16, choked almost the same (.005 and .014). I just seem to snap shoot the shorter barreled gun in cover a little better.

AS FAR AS SHOT SIZE ,I WILL HAVE TO DEFER TO MY FRIEND SCOTT HINKER IN NE. HE USES #7.5 IN HIS RIZINNI 28 BORE WITH GOOD EFFECT.

#7.5 SHOT IS ONE OF THE BEST SHOT SIZES FOR SMALLERBORES. NICE PATTERNS AND GOOD RETAINED ENERGY.

I've had my share fail to fire's with the remington gameloads in my citori. I shoot them for clays, where it is annoying at times, but I do not use them on live birds. I probably have one out of 100 fail to strike suficeint in the lower barrel.

I like the winchester or fiocchi for birds. Win's #8 are fine for close shots. I load the fiocchi plated #7.5 in the top barrel when hunting in a group. That allows me to pick up a late shot if needed.

I personally have never had a FTF with winchester, federal or fiocchi.

Maybe you just need to pack better shells?

I don't think it is safe to shoot when you are backing up.
