I've never shot a "crazy quail" course, but That sounds like a fine 16ga event. Walking course, gun down, maybe ~50 clays, and a couple close in ZZbirds would be nice. maybe have a couple dog cutouts "pointing" the ZZbirds. Two shooters walk the path, trapper with remote walks behind them and sets off targets without calling for them.
There's no place around me that would be able to dedicate the land to a set-up like this, but it sure would be a lot of fun. |

My ultimate shoot would be a walking course or two during daylight hours and an Australian or five-stand shoot at night under lights, so a crowd of folks could watch from stands, etc. Then you have the logistics problems that go with large events, but it would be a great fund raiser for some club out there.

I am not much of a hunter, but sure like to shoot clays. I have run many tournaments of various sorts but ask your help.
Kindly post your idea of a perfect clays event for exercising our 16 gauge guns.

Helice [aka ZZ Birds] proves too hard for all but the hardened clays shooters, so I will not go that direction. The most popular events we have run have been Sporting Clays events.
I am still anxious to try Argentina. |

I stand corrected. Like you said, I would like to try the Argentina style of shooting. From what I've seen from a course design, it looks like the presentations represent the most challenging common shots, and it requires one to be prepared and really move when the clays start flying; once you ask for the first bird, automatic kicks in and you have a given amount of time to shoot the quickly paced onslaught of clays. It's as I imagine what it would be like to be in a really busy South American dove field with a bird boy and a case of shells. |

And a round of 25 is over in 2 minutes. That means alot of targets for a lot of shooters in short time. I'm liking the Argentina Clays idea.

Ya, but you need one of those modern guns, with ejectors. |

Just a couple thrown in, maybe at the end of the course, and have them marked with the pointer cutout. instead of the standard 25m setback, use a closer distance to simulate birds over dogs, within safety limits of course..
OP asked for my opinion for a ideal SC course for 16ga. I think you should be walking, no determined stations and have a partner. Trapper knows when your in position, and pulls with or with out warning (ie bird coming in right, or bird left). Total score is your combined score, not individual.
I'll admit it is pretty impractical due to the space you need for fallout and the fact that only two shooters can use the course at one time. But as far as simulating upland hunting, I think it would be hard to beat!
I'd like to try the Argintina clays too! |
