What is the outlook for ruffed grouse in Minnesota this year?
I doubt I can make it, going to NoDak at least twice, S. Dakota at least once and maybe to New Mexico for a quail shoot.
I don't think I can fit an Oct Minnesota grouse hunt in. Hoping to next year.
Just curious, haven't heard much. |

Grouse
It looks like a terible season for grouse in Minnesota. I would really try for Wisconsin for grouse. No drumming at all this year and no coveys spotted at all. Minnesota would be a waste of time.. |

In a nutshell, the grouse in MN, WI and lakes states in general are making the slow climb up. It's not going to be a "peak" year, but in general things are getting a little better. |

Well, they certainly can't get much worse. Michigan last year was awful for putting up birds. In an early season weekend with two men and a dog we put up maybe 10 birds, |

I certainly wouldn't call 10 birds, in one weekend, a bad weekend.
You did better than must reports I heard last year. I thought 2007 was a poor year, and I haven't seen very many birds at all again this year.
I'll have to go to Wisconsin, I guess. |

I tink da UP will be "ok" for birds this year. I had a poor year last year and heard, after the season, the birds were hanging out in the hardwoods. That's a place I didn't look!
I've definitely been seeing some birds out in the brush over the past few weeks.
I'll let ya know how things go . . . around January!

The Great Lakes various DNR's report that the highest average flush rate in 2007 was 2.1 p/hr and that this year the drumming counts are up about 21%. So that puts us maybe 2 to 3 years from the next peak. The low flush rate was 1.1 per hour, but that was in a really marginal area for grouse.
What are the reports for pheasant and sharptails?
