As the bird season quickly approaches, I was wondering who hunts with a single? I am thinking I may give it a whirl this year but only have my old 16 single. I have never hunted anything before (except fish) so this is all a learning experience. |

that's how I started, at the insistence of my dad. safety number one, but he wanted me to learn to make that first shot count. my cousin had an 1100 rem. I can rember him unloading the gun at one bird. I would shoot once and typically start to fill my bag. I killed my first duck with that old stevens 410. I still have it and it's just as heavy now as then. I jumped two ducks off of a ditch and killed the first one. I was so fast at reloading (I carried a new shell in my left hand between the index and ring finger) that I dusted the tail feathers on the other one. I was only 12 and duck season wasn't exactly in at the time. I guess the statute of limitations has run out by now. |

Hey you have the wave of the future in your hands with a single shot go ahead and use it like it was supposed to be used , Hunt with it by all means .
I just bought a BOLT ACTION J. C. HIGGINS 16GA . that is going on the hunt with me to the Dakotas this fall.

I say it's a safe bet more upland game has been taken with a single shot than any other type of action- |

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Now I just need to learn what to do out there and practice shooting more. The plan would be to go and get a guide for a half day at a local preserve for some guidance. Local preserve in jersey has Pheasant, Chukar, and Quail, what would be a good size shot for that type of hunting? I have a bunch of Remington Game loads 7 1/2 1200fps. would those be adequate?
Thanks |

Creeker,
Those RGL in 7 1/2 are all that I use for preserve hunting, for Pheasant, Chuker & Quail. They do their part if I do my part. |

Make yourself very familiar with your single and you will do quite well with it. I have a fair selection of other guns, but I still enjoy shooting my Uncle Rich's old 94C Stevens every year. It's also my first choice when I climb the mountain in spring turkey season. Beats lugging an SP10 a mile and a half uphill. Good hunting. FRED |

My hunting buddy of almost 50 years still hunts upland with a single shot 16 gauge. He has an excellent eye and is quite a bird shot. Of course now he uses a 12 gauge 3&1/2" pump for turkeys!-Dick |

My dove gun last year was a Winchester MOdel 37 16 ga single shot, mod choke. Did just fine with it.
Haven't decided on the main gun this year yet.
