Having just moved to Eastern Kentucky from Nashville I was worried about finding dove field in the area. At the last minute I found a WMA in Ohio, grabbed the Model 12 (1946 vintage) and a couple boxes of #8 16 gauge Estate shells and drove up this evening for the opener. Had a 15 acre prepared field with one other hunter in sight. The birds were flying great. Best of all on the way in I saw a suspicious brown blur in a bush just off the road. When I got out of the truck and kicked at the scrub I flushed one of the largest coveys of wild quail I have ever seen. MY GSP will love this place when the season opens for quail in mid-October. |

Almost the same thing happened to me in NC. Found a great looking dove field but only a few doves. As the afternoon came to a close you could hear the quail calling from everywhere. Evidently several covies were busted up during the day.
I'll be back in a couple of months with my GSP. |
